World Lupus Day at KIMS

World Lupus Day has been celebrated at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) today to aware people about various Lupus diseases. Lupus is a disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). On this occasion a yoga session with a theme “Yoga for better living” was organized in the morning, where more than 50 participants took part. During the patient experience sharing session after yoga patients were provided a free consultation. Patients who were suffering from lupus shared their treatment experience in KIMS, and now leading normal lives.

“Treatment of Lupus and other autoimmune diseases vary from one patient, so one should not generalize and draw conclusions” said, Prof. Ramnath Misra, HoD, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, KIMS-Bhubaneswar. He also called upon the patients to have faith in the doctors and never lose hope.

Prof. Prasanta Padhan, Rheumatologist of KIMS said “awareness on the autoimmune diseases should be more as even today people are not treating themselves with the experts and suffering.” Associate Prof. Sakir Ahmed said “communication with the patient is the most important for any chronic disease and asked the patients to talk freely without inhibition with their doctors.”

Assistant Prof. Debashish Maikap and postgraduate residents of the department and other staff members of KIMS and KIMS Super Speciality Hospital were present during the event.

Every year the day is celebrated on May 10 and this year’s theme was “Make Lupus Visible”, in order to increase public awareness about lupus diagnosis and its psychological, social, and economic consequences.
