Radiation Oncology Clinical Services Started at KIMS Cancer Centre

The clinical services in the Radiation Oncology Department at KIMS Cancer Centre (KCC) was started from 14th March, 2023; with the practice of state-of-art linear accelerator-based radiotherapy for cancer patients and the related research works.

This facility could be enhanced by the collaborations and referral from the various Departments under Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS). The radiation oncology equipment can have the possibilities of collaboration with other Schools under KIIT-Deemed-to-be-University (KIIT-DU). KCC is poised to become the first resource-appropriate unique cancer management centre in Odisha for the multi-speciality treatments of all types of cancers. The highly precision linear accelerators and brachytherapy can deliver radiation therapy to the tumors with high accuracy and can improve cancer control with minimal morbidities for the cancer patients.

KCC has departments and specialities like Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and Nuclear Medicine as it positions to offer comprehensive cancer care for the patients from Odisha and neighbouring regions. The cancer management services being offered at KCC for the patients consist of Cancer Diagnosis, Cancer Registration, Multi-disciplinary Tumor Pathology and Laboratory Tests, Endoscopy, and cancer imaging. Other key supportive services such as psycho-oncology, patient care navigation and coordination for home care are in place at KCC. Multidisciplinary tumor boards on a weekly basis take the collective expert decision for the treatments of cancer patients and guide them accordingly.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT, KISS and KIMS said, “the modern cancer care centre adopts multi-disciplinary approaches to cancer treatment. Critical actions will be decided by a Tumor Board, which will also monitor ethical and empathetic practices. The treatment and cancer management will be facilitated in a time-bound manner and within one’s socio-economic means. The OPD and in-patient care are available for all cancer patients at the Centre.’’

“KCC will integrate cancer support services for the well-being of cancer patients and support their family caregivers,’’ informed Prof Dr. Bidhu Kalyan Mohanti, Director, KCC.

“In future KCC will train manpower, carry out academic programmes, and research activities on cancer specialities, and combine the works with basic and laboratory-related disciplines. KCC will also provide patient care coordination, diet and physiotherapy modalities and cancer research. The Surgical Oncology section is equipped with modern modular OT, advanced laparoscopic surgery and harmonic scalpel. The Radiation Oncology has two linear accelerators, high dose brachytherapy and Radiation therapy planning. Medical Oncology has day care chemotherapy and indoor wards including isolation/ICU care and is poised to implement bone marrow transplant. Palliative Care and Psycho-Oncology address the physical and mental relief measures for the cancer patients and integrate the family caregivers.’’ added Prof Mohanti.
