First Hybrid Surgery Performed at KIMS

Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have claimed to have performed the first hybrid surgery in Odisha. The surgery, performed on Sushama Rana (50) from Ratagada village under Banki block of Cuttack district, was necessitated, as she complained of severe pain in her chest, back and belly.

Following multiple consultations at various places Sushama could not get her pain relieved and came to KIMS on January 18 and consulted cardiologists. After a series of tests it was inferred that there was an internal bleeding on an aorta which supplies blood to different major organs in her body.

The cardiology and cardiac surgery team at KIMS, after deciding for a hybrid surgery, started the action and as the first step cardio thoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) surgeons Dr. A. Sharda and Dr. Chandan Kumar Ray Mohapatra did a bypass surgery and joined the aorta with the vessels supplying blood to left arm and brain.

After the bypass graft prevented brain stroke and maintained blood supply to the left arm, the cardiology team led by Dr. Anupam Jena put a covered stent inside the damaged aorta to seal its tear.

This procedure was done for the first time in Odisha despite the fact that an untreated dissection of the aorta could create many serious issues as blood gets stuck in the damaged portion of the aorta wall. This could also result in heart attack, brain damage, kidney damage, intestinal problems etc.

As this emergency was thoroughly understood by the cardiology team of KIMS and the issue was addressed, the timely intervention with hybrid surgery could avoid the complications. It can be mentioned here that KIMS, as a major healthcare institution in Eastern India has pioneered many aspects of Cardiology including the first in Odisha to have done trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, endovascular repair of the aorta and electrophysiology studies of radio frequency ablation (EPS-RFA) in which complex cardiac arrhythmias is done.

With the help of KIMS cardiac anaestesiologist Dr. Ashok Kumar Badmali, the surgery continued for about five hours. If the surgery was delayed it could have resulted in multi-organ failure in the patient.

For this type of hybrid surgery patients generally go outside Odisha and spend around Rs 14 to 15 lakh, but at KIMS it was performed with an amount of Rs 6.5 lakh only. Five days after the surgery, Sushama returned to her village and is doing well.

“For the doctors and cardiologists and cardio-thoracic surgeons of KIMS I could get my life back. I would remain grateful forever to the authorities concerned for the treatment,” she added.
