National Webinar on “Methods in Social Science Research” at KIIT Law School

The Centre for Criminology, Victimology and Police Science under the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, KIIT Law School (KLS) organized a National Webinar on “Methods in Social Science Research” on 22nd January 2022. Prof. Pranam Dhar, Professor & Head, Department of Commerce & Management, West Bengal State University; Prof. (Dr.) N. K. Chakrabarti, Vice Chancellor, WBNUJS; Prof. Gautam Bandyopadhyay, Former HoD, Department of Management Studies, NIT; and Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivasan, Professor & Head, Department of Criminology, University of Madras were the resource persons.

Delivering the keynote address on the topic “Lack of Research on Youth and Young Adult Offenders”, Prof. (Dr.) B. P. Panda, Director, KLS said that youth contribute to nation building more compared to any other section of the society. Not much research has been done in this particular field, he pointed out, while stating that research in the field can further highlight the required reforms in the systems of juvenile justice, young adult offenders and their correctional system.

Prof. Pranam Dhar spoke on the topic “Ethical Issues in Management Research”. He deliberated on research ethics, its explanation and importance. The discussion included ethical guidelines and legislation, research, ethics and society along with norms and values of research. The speaker concluded with deliberation on plagiarism and its consequences, and publication ethics.

Prof. Dr. N. K. Chakrabarti addressed the participants on “Research Report and Thesis Writing” He discussed the format of the research including the title, approval sheets, acknowledgement, preface, tables of contents, lists of texts, tables and figures, main body, literature review and lastly reference section. The speaker described each category and gave a clear understanding of every concept.

Prof. Gautam Bandhyopadhyay spoke on “Statistical Tools in Social Science Research”. He pointed out the difference between statistical data and dumb data. The definition of statistical data was given along with its significance. The speaker deliberated on the branches of statistics and explained Descriptive (1st collection of data) and Inferential Statistics (diagnostic part).

The last speaker of the day, Prof. M. Srinivasan spoke on “Construction of Research Tool”. The speaker emphasized how today’s discussion mainly focused on constructing a research instrument in quantitative research. The quantitative research method is the formal, objective, systematic process in which numerical data are utilized to obtain information. Towards the end of the session the speaker also presented some samples of research instruments.

Earlier, Dr. Arpita Mitra, Associate Professor, KLS & Coordinator, CCVPS welcomed the delegates and participants and explained the “Use of Research Tools in Empirical Research”. She detailed different types of research, especially focusing on empirical research. Dr. Sanghamitra Patnaik, Associate Professor, KLS, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities also spoke on the occasion.

The webinar had around eighty-seven participants. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. S. S. Dash, Convenor, CCVPS. Ms. Sushree S. Mishra, Ms. Surbhi Sawaria, Ms. Dishani Sen, Ms. Anantyoya Chatterjee, Mr. Dipro Hajra, Ms. Manisha Ghosh, Ms. Kirti Lal, Ms. Sonakshi Chinda, Mr. Bibaswan Maharana, Ms. Shalini Jha, Mr. Sayandeep Chakraborty, and Mr. Aryan Roy were members of the CCVPS student organizing team.
