Advisor and senior consultant with Department of Nephrology, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Bhubaneswar, Dr. Aswini Prasad Patnaik presented a scientific paper in an international forum during the observation of Kidney Week in Orlando, USA from November 1-6 2022. This conference was organised by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).

About 8,000 delegates from 120 countries attended this ASN Kidney Week Conference. Patnaik’s paper on “Study of acute kidney injury in Scrub Typhus” was well appreciated. This study was conducted in KIMS by the Department of General Medicine and Department of Nephrology, after getting approval from the Institute’s Research & Ethics Committee.

Scrub Typhus is one of the world’s most underappreciated tropical diseases. It is an infectious disease caused by the bite of infected chiggers(larval mites). The course of the disease is mild to severe form involving multi-organs and can cause death in some cases. This disease is endemic in the state of Odisha. The KIMS team performed the study for two and a half years and the study did not show any mortalities. It was observed that timely intervention and multi-disciplinary involvement yielded good results.
