Bangladeshi media academician visits KIIT School of Mass Communication

Bringing a slice of Bangladesh to Bhubaneswar, Mr. Rajib Nandy, a media academician and researcher from the University of Chittagong addressed the students of KIIT School of Mass Communication on 7th August, 2019.

An Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, Mr. Nandy talked about the serious issues of mob lynching in both the countries, coverage of Indian election and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladeshi dailies and influence of Bollywood on the Bangladeshi fashion industry.

He held a fruitful discussion on his research findings in the rising cases of mob lynching cases in Bangladesh and India.“Use of new media has a huge (negative) impact in spreading the rumors leading to lynching. The economically lower class people are mostly victims, theft, rumors of child kidnapping and religious fundamentalism is a reason”, he said.

Mr. Nandy further took the students to a tour of front page coverage of International, West Bengal and Bangladesh newspapers after recent national election in India. He talked about difference and similarity in Bangladesh and India. On a lighter vein, he told students about a study on how Bollywood and Indian Bengali TV serials have influenced the Bangladeshi fashion industry.

On the onset of the talk, on the sad demise of prominent BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, Ms. Ipsita Bhowmick, 3rd semester Master of Communication and Journalism (Integrated) student read out an obituary followed by one minute silence.

Ms. Sandhya Agrawal introduced the guest while Ms. Simran Chanda gave the Vote of Thanks, both 5th Semester students. Senior academician Dr. Deepak Samantarai and Senior Journalist Mr. Dilip Bisoi felicitated the esteemed speaker with flowers and a scroll.

Besides students, the faculty members of School of Mass Communication, Dr. Bidu Bhushan Dash, Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator, Ms. Ruby Nanda, Assistant Professor, Dr Anurag Sahu Assistant Professor and Mr. Souptik Garai, Faculty Associate were also present during the interaction.
