KIIT School of Biotechnology organized KAIZEN- Industry Talk Series: Chapter I. Mr. Mohammed Shaffi, Technical Manager at Sophisticated Industrial Materials Analytic (SIMA) Labs Pvt Ltd. was the first guest of the Industry Talk Series.
He enlightened the participants on the work culture of commercial laboratories and scope for freshers. He particularly stressed upon the importance of the accreditation process for labs and the vital differences and requirements of ISO certificates. He maintained the importance of the various profiles in industry that are pertinent to students of biotechnology/microbiology. He also explained about industrial hierarchies and how they work – the existence of the hierarchies show that education doesn’t end at college for a life science-based profession, one must endeavor to keep learning about advancements and breakthroughs of one’s subject if one wishes to succeed in a professional career. He explained the four main types of laboratories life science students can work in and, depending on which background one has, which labs would be ideal for them.
The participants also received a brief overview of steps involved in a commercial lab. At the end, they learnt about NABL and its objectives; their involvement in the accreditation process and the exams/training programs useful for freshers. This followed a thorough Q&A session by enthusiastic students and faculties alike. The end of the talk was marked by Dr. Gopal Chowdhary, thanking the speaker for the informative talk as well as the participants for their patience and eagerness.
Mr. Shaffi hails from Microbiology background and has more than 10 years of experience in Industrial Microbiology. He has previously worked at FICCI Research and Analysis Centre, Delhi and Farelabs, Hyderabad, as a Senior Analyst. He is an ISO certified auditor and an approved analyst for microbiological analysis of drugs and cosmetics from Drug Control Dept. Govt. of NCT of Delhi. Along with that, he is also an NABL Authorized Signatory with a history of working in the food and beverage industry.
