NSS Unit of KIIT SME and SAE hosts Orientation Programme for Newly Inducted Volunteers on “A New Beginning, A Greater Purpose”
The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME) and School of Aerospace Engineering (SAE), KIIT DU organized an orientation programme titled “A New Beginning, A Greater Purpose” on 28th August 2026. The programme was organized to welcome and acquaint the newly inducted volunteers with the vision, objectives, values, and principles of NSS and to inspire them to actively participate in community service and nation-building activities.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Smruti Ranjan Das, NSS Liaison Officer, KIIT-DU, who welcomed the newly recruited volunteers to the NSS family. He introduced them to the fundamentals of NSS, its various activities, and the opportunities available to volunteers. He also highlighted their roles and responsibilities and emphasized the importance of unity, discipline, leadership, and selfless service.
Dr Prabhat Kumar Rout, Program Coordinator, NSS Bureau of KIIT-DU, elaborated on the NSS motto, mission, and vision, explaining their significance through an inspiring story. He emphasized that NSS is not merely about community service but also about the holistic personality development of students through meaningful engagement with society.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. P. Chandrasekhar, Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT-DU, highlighted the transformative role of NSS in shaping students into socially responsible and compassionate individuals. He spoke about the significance of social work and the benefits of being an NSS volunteer. He encouraged the students to dedicate themselves to the continuous service of society and motivated them to inspire their peers to become part of the NSS movement.
The keynote address was delivered by the Chief Guest, Prof. Ajit Kushwaha, Regional Director, Regional Directorate of NSS, Bhubaneswar. He highlighted the crucial role played by NSS volunteers in nation-building, community development, and social transformation. He explained how active participation in NSS helps students develop essential qualities such as leadership, empathy, teamwork, confidence, and a sense of responsibility. He also encouraged the newly inducted volunteers to register on the My Bharat Portal, which provides young people with opportunities to learn, volunteer, develop skills, and participate in activities contributing to nation-building.
The programme was further enriched by an inspiring address from Prof. (Dr.) Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Pro Vice Chancellor, KIIT-DU. He emphasized that empathy, kindness, and compassion are among the most important values that students can develop through the NSS platform. He encouraged the volunteers to extend their service beyond geographical boundaries and be ready to help communities wherever their support is needed, particularly during natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. Referring to recent natural calamities, including the floods in Nepal, he urged the students to develop a spirit of service that transcends borders. He also encouraged them to actively participate in initiatives such as blood donation drives, plantation programs, and social awareness campaigns.
A formal NSS pledge-taking ceremony was conducted, marking the official induction of the newly recruited volunteers into the NSS family. This was followed by a motivational video showcasing the journey, achievements, and community initiatives undertaken by the NSS Unit of SME and SAE.
The closing segment featured a captivating Odissi performance, which enthralled the audience and added a vibrant cultural dimension to the event. This was followed by an engaging quiz and Nukkad Natak presented by the NSS volunteers. As the new volunteers begin their NSS journey, they carry with them a simple yet powerful message: “Not Me, But You” — a commitment to serve, lead, inspire, and make a meaningful difference in society.
