USAID team to witness pre service education (pse) strengthening activities

On 19th January, officials from USAID India (Ms. Ramona M EL Hamzaoui, Deputy Mission Director, Dr Xerses Sidhwa, Chief of Health and Mr. Vijay Paul Raj, Project Management Specialist) and Jhpiego India (Dr Bulbul Sood, Country Director, Dr Anita Anasuya, State Team Leader, Dr Ravikumar AV, State Program Officer and Ms. Annie Priscilla, Senior Program Officer) visited KINS. The purpose of visit was to observe the USAID-APS supported activities in the state of Odisha for improving the quality of pre-service education, and interact with management. The team felt warmly welcomed in traditional Odisha style.Prof. Ms. Amrita Lenka briefed the team regarding the quality of nursing education in Private sector in Odisha and the strengthening activities carried out by KINS.

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS)  is supported under the USAID-APS project in partnership with Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University,  to strengthen Pre-Service Nursing-Midwifery Education (PSE) in the private sector through standard Based Recognition  and Management approach, thereby contributing to strengthening the delivery of high-impact RMNCH+A (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Adolescence) interventions. There have been efforts to leverage the institution’s own resources, thereby improving the sustainability of PSE strengthening, as per standards established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, and Indian Nursing Council.

The team visited the Skill lab and witnessed skill demonstration by faculty members to students. The Skill laboratory provides an opportunity for skill based training using mannequins to enable humanistic training to students. Later the team visited the Virtual classroom session being done for the faculty from different institutions across Odisha. The virtual classroom provides an opportunity to leverage information technology tools to build the capacity of faculty and students in private nursing training institutions.Both the events were followed by interactions with faculty and students to understand how the USAID supported project has been able to strengthen quality of PSE.The visiting officials appreciated the efforts taken by KINS and wished other private nursing institutions in Odisha adopt the same for quality of Pre-Service Education.

The team visited Kalinga Institute of social Sciences (KISS) and interacted with students and officials on the service being rendered towards welfare of tribal students.
