Safe Motherhood Day Observed by Dept of O&G Nursing, KIMS

The journey of motherhood is a special one and it comes with both joy and responsibility. The Department of Obstetrical and Gynecological Nursing, Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), a constituent under KIIT-DU, observed National Safe Motherhood Day on 10thApril on the theme “Play Your Part: Together For Respectful Maternity Care’’.

Safe Motherhood Day is observed every year on April 11 to raise awareness in society about the importance of proper maternal healthcare services for mothers during antenatal, intra natal and postnatal periods. A pregnant woman should have a positive experience at each stage of pregnancy to ensure her child is born healthy. Maternal well-being is a comprehensive effort to reduce maternal mortality.

Latest News The first event of the day was a socio-drama, performed by G.N.M 3rd year students at UHTC Niladri Vihar. The drama focused on the significance of institutional delivery and contraceptive uses, depicting a comparison between home delivery and institutional delivery and how it has been affecting the health of the mother and child. Nearly 30-40 community people observed the drama and shared their opinions on the drama scene. The socio drama was well-well-acknowledged by the audience.

In the afternoon session, the programme commenced with an inter-university palm painting competition on the theme with the participation of various colleges. A total of 250-300 participants attended the event, representing AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Vivekananda College of Nursing, Ashwini College of Nursing, Hi-tech College of Nursing, and KINS, Bhubaneswar.

Students from Ashwini College of Nursing bagged the 1st and 2nd prizes and KINS won the 3rd prize for the palm painting Inter-university quiz competition was held among 5 teams creating a tremendous-effect on the audience by revealing its winner as Kalinga Institute of Nursing sciences and AIIMS, Bhubaneswar were declared as the Runner’s- up for the same. The students were awarded at the end of the program.

The chief guest of the formal event was Dr. Dinabandhu Sahoo, Team leader SHSRC, Bhubaneswar and the Guest of honour was Dr. Sudarshan Dash, Director, Dept. OBG, PBMH KIMS. Dr Niyati Das, Principal, KINS delivered the welcome address where she stressed the theme. Thereafter, the keynote address was highlighted by Prof. Kalyani Rath, Vice-Principal-cum- HOD, O&G Nursing, KINS.

Dr. Sudarshan Dash, the Guest of honour, emphasized the importance of safe motherhood while describing how National Safe Motherhood Day in India is more than just a day; it catalyzes change.

Lastly, Dr. Dinabandhu Sahoo gave an amazing speech to the audience about the responsibility of healthcare professionals in providing respectful maternity care. He enlightened about the steps for the prevention of MMR rates in different states.

A theme-based dance was enacted by B.Sc. Nursing 4th-year students, performing, used various gestures and facial expressions to depict different scenarios related to pregnancy and the unfairness towards the girl child and physical assault happening in the society.

In the end, a vote of gratitude was proposed by Mrs. Anusuya Behera, Assistant Professor, O&G nursing, KINS to conclude the programme. She expressed appreciation to the audience of various colleges.
