KINS observes World Down Syndrome Day

Department of Pediatrics, Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) observed World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, 2023 at Obstetrics and Gyaenocology and Pediatric lobby, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) auditorium with the theme for 2023, “With Us not For Us”.

During this observance, a theme-based awareness programme was conducted by GNM second year and Bsc Nursing third year studentsin lobby of O&G and Paediatric building, KIMS. They used various audio-visual aids like posters and flashcards to disseminate the useful information on Down Syndrome.They put forth a message that people with Down Syndrome should be treated with respect and dignity. Public enthusiastically participated in this programme.

In the afternoon session, a talk was arranged at KIDS auditorium. The programme was inaugurated with lamp lighting in the presence dignitaries. In her welcome address Prof. Niyati Das, Principal, KINS spoke about the theme and emphasized on importance of awareness about Down Syndrome and acceptance of people with this condition.

Speaking on Down syndrome, Prof.Bandya Sahoo of Department of Pediatric, KIMS elaborately discussed on what is Down Syndrome, its risk factors as well as causative factors, pathophysiology, its different types, various types of screening and diagnostic methods, age specific health care, emotional coping, nursing care planning and goals with citing suitable examples.

The event was enriched by a good interactive session with the speakers and audience.

A token of appreciation was put forwarded by Asst. Prof. Purnima Sahoo, KINS. Students from GNM second year, B.Sc. Nursing third year, Msc. Nursing first and second year and faculties attended.
