KINS Observes Heart Failure Awareness Week-2024

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences, KIIT (DU) observed Heart Failure Awareness week-2024 recently to create awareness about the risk factors, signs, symptoms, and preventive measures of heart failure (HF). It was organized by the Medical Surgical Nursing Department.

Heart failure is a progressive condition in which the heart loses its ability to pump enough blood to supply the body’s needs. Thus, preventing Heart Failure has become a strategic health priority for every country.

At the outset, a programme was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Niyati Das, Principal, KINS; Mrs. Geetarani Mohanta, NS, PBMH (KIMS); Prof. Asokan R., HOD, Dept. of Medical surgical Nursing; and Mrs. Susama Sahu, Nursing Advisor, PBMH (KIMS). Students of KINS lifted the curtains to the day performing a wonderfully choreographed dance that reflected the awareness aspects, followed by role-play and Nukkad at KIMS Hospital Lobby, to create awareness among people regarding heart failure by delivering health education.

On the same day, a Special Talk on heart failure interactive session by (Prof.) Dr. Subasish Mishra, Asso. Prof. and HOD cardiology, KIMS, enlightened the risk factors and prevention of heart diseases by taking care of certain diseases like CHD, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension and managing cholesterol levels, eating a well-balanced diet, regular exercise and screening which can reduce heart failure incidence. Prof. Asokan R., HOD, Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing, gave the welcome address and unfolded the theme that is “Heartbeat of Research”.

He discussed about the universal definition of heart failure according to different societies of cardiology, the stages of heart failure and risk factors of heart failures, different symptoms and classification of heart failures, advanced management and the collaborative role of specialist nurses.

After the session there was an interaction and doubt clearing session among students and a Vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Nibedita Mohanty, Asso. Prof, Dept. of Medical surgical Nursing, KINS, KIIT-DU. All the faculties of KINS, MSc. 1styr, 2nd yr, B.Sc. nursing 3rd semester and GNM 2nd yr students participated.

The session was very enthusiastic which made the students enlighten their knowledge regarding cardiovascular diseases and its prevention.

On the next day, a cardio-physical training Workshop was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Saswati Sahoo, certified fitness trainer of KIIT (DU) for 35 faculties and students of KINS to maintain good cardiac health. During the day, a spot painting competition was organized on the theme “Heartbeat of Research” where 21 students of KINS participated and presented their thoughts and creativity. The programme was  judged by Dr. Anupam Jena, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Cardiology, PBMH, KIMS and Dr. V. Sivasankari, HOD, Dept. of Mental Health Nursing, KINS, KIIT-DU. The prize distribution ceremony brought to close the two day event.
