KSMC Faculty Delivers Expert Talk at Webinar Series of Communication Today

Communication Today, a bilingual media quarterly journal published from Jaipur, organized its 37th National Webinar on ‘Entertainment of the Future: OTT’ on 19th February 2022.

The key speakers at this webinar were Prof. Mukul Shrivastava, Head, Department of Mass Communication, Lucknow University; Shri Shyam Mathur, Film Critic and Analyst, Jaipur; Dr. Rajeev Kumar Panda, Assistant Professor, School of Mass Communication, KIIT-DU; and Shri Saptarishi Majumdar, Writer, Director & Creative Producer, Kolkata. Prof Sanjeev Bhanawat, Editor of Communication Today and Former Professor, Center for Mass Communication, Rajasthan University conducted the programme.

The session started with Saraswati Vandana sung by Dr. Usha Sawhney followed by Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat introducing the topic and opening the platform for the media professionals.

Prof. Mukul Shrivastava talked about the impact of mobile on individuals in the last five years, focusing on change in behavior due to smartphones on the way people consume content. Shri Shyam Mathur spoke on the availability of non-fiction content in the OTT platforms, focusing on the transition from fiction stories in television to non-fiction content on OTT.

Dr. Rajeev Kumar Panda presented data and statistics from Digital 2022 showing the increase in digital growth and the consumption pattern of the audience. Mentioning the change in viewing experience in OTT from the traditional channels, he stated, “Since 2012, there has been a substantial increase in the experience of OTT platforms.” An increase in digitally connected services leads to an increase in the number of audiences, he said. OTT is bypassing other platforms in streaming its content. Likewise, he pointed out the increase in original and high-value content on the platform at a lower cost, and discussed the influence of AI in making the OTT experience more personalized.

Shri Saptarishi Majumdar started by mentioning the factors for OTT becoming the future of entertainment, “OTT platform tracks the activity”, accordingly suggesting content based on consumption pattern and liked subjects. He stated that OTT is the golden period for writers. The programme ended with an interactive question and answer session.
