The Legal Services Clinic of KIIT Law School (KLS) organised a Legal Awareness Camp at Ashraya – The Shelter, Kataka, on 15 October 2026, to promote awareness of the rights, legal safeguards, and welfare provisions available for children with disabilities.

Ashraya – The Shelter is a special school dedicated to support children up to 18 years of age plagued with Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The camp focused on raising awareness about the legal rights of children with disabilities, relevant statutory protections, and various government schemes and welfare initiatives designed to support their education, development, and well-being. Faculty members and student volunteers interacted with the teachers of the special school and discussed the importance of legal safeguards, inclusive education, accessibility, and the effective implementation of welfare schemes.

The team appreciated the dedication, patience, and commitment of the teachers at Ashraya – The Shelter, recognising their significant role in supporting the learning, development, and well-being of the children. The volunteers also interacted with the students, gaining a better understanding of their experiences, needs, and abilities. The visit provided a meaningful opportunity to connect classroom learning with community engagement and the practical dimensions of disability rights.

The camp was coordinated by Mr. Lokanath Mohapatra, Director, Legal Services; Mr. Shashank Nande and Dr. Pragynya Parimita Ray, Faculty Coordinators, Legal Services Clinic, with the support of Ms. Susmita Mishra, Faculty Member, Legal Services Clinic, and Ms. Amrita Bal, Assistant Legal Officer. The programme was also attended by Mr. Shashreek Shikhar, alumnus of KLS, and Smt. Mitalee Jesthi, Advocate, Orissa High Court.

The initiative reaffirmed KIIT Law School’s commitment to promoting legal literacy, protecting the rights of children with disabilities, and fostering an inclusive and equitable society through community engagement and experiential legal education.
