KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar has taken a significant step toward fostering academic excellence and research innovation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)—the National Standards Body of India. The MoU signing ceremony was presided over and witnessed by Prof. (Dr.) Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, KIIT-DU; Prof. (Dr.) J. R. Mohanty, Registrar, KIIT-DU; Shri A. K. Purohit, Senior Director and Head, BIS Bhubaneswar; Prof. (Dr.) B. Surekha, Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT-DU and professors from different schools of Engineering.
The partnership began to take shape when KIIT recognized the valuable support BIS offers for sponsored research projects post-MoU. This realization led the university to initiate formal discussions with BIS, eventually culminating in this landmark agreement.
As part of the growing engagement between the two institutions, BIS organized the Manak Mahotsav 2024 at KIIT. The event, held with the enthusiastic support of the School of Mechanical Engineering, was a grand success and marked a milestone in BIS-KIIT collaboration.
Following the event, KIIT expressed its interest in further strengthening ties through the establishment of a BIS Club on campus. The proposal was positively received and approved by the Director of BIS. The BIS Club at KIIT was inaugurated and has already started creating impact—most notably by successfully organizing a departmental hackathon aimed at promoting innovation and awareness of standards among students.
The formal signing of the MoU represented the beginning of a promising and multi-faceted partnership. As part of the agreement, KIIT and BIS planned to work together on several forward-looking initiatives, including: Establishing a Centre of Excellence in the field of Standardization, Testing, and Conformity Assessment; Setting up an Indian Standards Laboratory; Launching specialized academic courses aligned with BIS standards and practices; Supporting faculty-led R&D projects through BIS funding opportunities; Engaging students through funding for academic projects, workshops, and events; and Hosting joint training programs, short-term courses, and symposia in areas related to standardization.
These initiatives are aimed at enhancing academic engagement, promoting research in standardization, and fostering a quality-conscious environment in line with national priorities.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), established under the BIS Act 2016, functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS is instrumental in the formulation and implementation of national standards, ensuring quality, safety, and reliability across various sectors. It also undertakes activities such as product certification, hallmarking, testing, and consumer awareness, through certification marks like the ISI mark and BIS Hallmark.
With a focus on academic collaboration and youth engagement, BIS has launched several initiatives to involve educational institutions, including the formation of BIS Clubs that foster awareness and innovation among students.
This MoU marks a strategic alignment between academia and a national regulatory body, with the shared goal of building a stronger, standards-driven ecosystem for India’s future.
