The world is sailing through troubled waters and the country is facing the second surge of the Covid-19 pandemic. Youth and adults, especially in the age slab of 30-50 years, are falling into the pangs of death because of this health crisis.

KISS Deemed to be University organized a webinar on “Health Management During 2nd Surge of Covid-19: Issues and Challenges” on 18th May 2021, for the staff members, students, and alumni to create awareness and sensitize on the subject and the steps to be followed to stay safe and strong during the pandemic.

The KIIT, KISS and KIMS group of institutions under the leadership of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS have constituted a Central Facilitation Committee to extend healthcare and medical benefits for all the employees and their immediate family members. The idea is to emotionally and medically bounce back and rebuild the world with the motto: “stronger together”. The webinar was graced by the Subject Expert Col. Dr. Lalita Kumari Patnaik, who is currently the Officer-In-Charge of P.G Academics at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). Before joining KIMS, Dr. Patnaik served at several prestigious places including in the Armed Forces as a Gynaecologist.

In her address, Col. Dr. Patnaik explained the etymological significance of the terms pandemic and Covid-19 and said: “We did not learn from the first wave and showed negligence, hence the second wave affected India badly. Lack of beds, no storage space for oxygen cylinders are some of the factors which contributed to the current situation. The strain in the second wave is more infectious and contagious compared to the first one. Glucometer, Oximeter and Thermometer are a must keep for self-monitoring.” Some of the measures to curb severity are staying hydrated, double masks, social distance, and sanitation, concluded Dr. Patnaik.

Professor Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice-Chancellor, KISS-DU appreciated the interactive and participatory mode of the webinar and congratulated the participants for being proactive in asking queries. He valued the work done by the Doctors and said that they are the ones fighting the battle as frontline Covid-19 warriors. He desired more such informative sessions in the days to come.

Dr. Prashanta Kumar Routray, Chief Executive Officer, KISS and Registrar, KISS-DU spoke about the emergency facilities provided by KIMS to the employees of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS during the pandemic. Elaborating the duties and responsibilities of the Central Facilitation Committee instituted by Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Dr. Routray said: “This Committee has been formed to extend help to the staff and immediate family members of KIIT Group of Institutions and KISS. This is a much-needed step, given the gravity of the situation arising out of the Covid-19 Pandemic and the havoc caused by this fatal virus. I hope that the KISS staff members will disseminate their learnings from this webinar to their family members and play a valuable role in breaking the chain.”

The webinar witnessed an engaging question and answer session moderated by Dr. Sujata Acharya. The queries primarily revolved around the preventive measures, and pointers on ways to increase immunity level which was answered by the Subject Expert.

On behalf of the entire KISS family, the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sujata Acharya, Principal, KISS and Director Academics, KISS-DU.
