KISS-DU Organizes Invited Lecture on ‘Success of Policy Integration of Tribals: Development of Scheduled Tribes in India’

An invited lecture on ‘Success of Policy Integration of Tribals: Development of Scheduled Tribes in India’ was jointly organized by the School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights (TLS) and the Centre for Study of Indigenous Peoples Across the Globe (CSIPAG), KISS Deemed to be University on 8th August 2022.

Professor Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice Chancellor, KISS-DU introduced the speaker, Dr. Nupur Tiwari as an active and knowledgeable person who is currently the Special Director, National Tribal Research Institute, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India. Dr. Pragyna Mohanty, Dean, TLS & Director, CSIPAG shared Dr. Towari’s contributions to administrative and academic fields.

In her address, Dr. Tiwary provided insights on pre and post-British era of tribal development; policy of isolation, assimilation and integration approach. She discussed the Policy of Isolation of Tribes formulated and developed by the British Government which has also been adopted in Article 244 of the Indian Constitution. She explained social anthropologist Professor G.H. Ghurey’s assimilation approach and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Panchsheel’ principle with regard to administration of Tribal Areas.

Dr. Tiwary focused on the role and support of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs through some of the initiatives like: establishment of Centre for Excellence, training the Artisans, Farmers, Tribal Groups and providing value adding programmes. In her deliberation, she highlighted the role played by the National Tribal Research Institute in the development of the tribal people across the country and further applauded the efforts of SC & ST Research and Training Institute, Govt. of Odisha for their excellent work for the development of SC and ST.

Professor Swarnamayee Tripathy, Professor Emeritus, KISS-DU summed-up the lecture. The question-and-answer session was moderated by Mr. Lochan Sabar, Faculty in Anthropology, KISS-DU. Dr. Anindita Nayak, Assistant Professor, Anthropology, KISS-DU proposed a Vote of Thanks and Ms. Saismita Swain, Faculty, Social Work, KISS-DU coordinated the lecture.
