KISS-DU Organizes Distinguished Invited Lecture on “Protein Structure Prediction Using Machine Learning”

The KISS Deemed to be University (KISS-DU) hosted a distinguished invited lecture titled “Predicting Protein Structures Using Machine Learning: The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry”, presented by Dr. Budheswar Dehury, Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). This event was organized by the Centre for Indigenous Science and Technology (CIST) and the School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science (SCISTS) on 7th November 2024.

The program commenced with a welcome address by the Vice Chancellor of KISS-DU, Professor Dr. Deepak Kumar Behera, who highlighted the significance of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, emphasizing their relevance to inter-disciplinary studies and everyday life. He also encouraged students to embrace these technologies to achieve success in their fields. Following the Vice Chancellor’s address, Dr. Vimal Kumar Pandey, Associate Professor,  introduced the distinguished speaker.

Dr. Dehury delivered an insightful lecture on the application of machine learning in predicting protein structures, an area recognized in the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His talk emphasized how machine learning is revolutionizing computational biology, offering transformative benefits to both medical and scientific research. The lecture resonated with attendees, including postgraduate and Ph.D. students from the departments of Botany, Zoology, and Food Science, who engaged enthusiastically in the interactive session that followed.

The event concluded with remarks from Dr. Priyoneel Basu, Dean of SCISTS and Director of Research at KISS-DU, and a vote of thanks by Dr. Sagarika Nayak, Head of the Department of Botany, KISS-DU. The event showcased KISS-DU’s commitment to fostering academic dialogue on cutting-edge scientific advancements.
