KISS-DU Commemorates 145th Birth Anniversary of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das

The Gopabandhu Research Chair at KISS Deemed to be University (KISS-DU) organized a webinar on ‘Gopabandhu and Nationalism’ to commemorate the 145th Birth Anniversary of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das in a blended mode on 9th October 2021. Shri. Manoranjan Panigrahi, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax graced the occasion.

In his inaugural address, Professor Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice-Chancellor, KISS-DU spoke about the early life and struggles faced by Gopabandhu Das. While discussing his notable achievements, Professor Behera drew references from his writings, including the famous book ‘Dharmapada.’ He threw light on the legend’s social and political works and urged the participants to emulate the philosophy of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das. Professor Behera also appreciated the performance by the Cultural Wing of KISS-DU. Dr. Bijayananda Singh, Research Chair Professor, Gopanbandhu Das Research Chair explained historical references and the pivotal role of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das in the freedom movement. Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das advocated humanity and compassion which is also the foundation stone of KISS, he added.

Speaking on the topic ‘Gopabandhu and Nationalism’, Shri. Manoranjan Panigrahi described Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das as a multi-faceted person whose dedication is praiseworthy. He presented a short biography of Gopabandhu Das and explained how he chose to dedicate his life to the upliftment of Odisha despite all odds. Shri Panigrahi talked about the formation of Satyabadi Bana Bidyalaya and Gopabnadhu Das’s association with Pt. Nilakantha Das, Acharya Harihar, Pt. Godavarish Mishra, and Pt. Krupasindhu Mishra. He also talked about Gopanbandhu Das’s immense contribution to education and establishing educational institutions in Odisha. As per the views of Gopabandhu Das, learning through mother tongue is the best way to gain knowledge.  Shri Panigrahi, in his discourse, illuminated the audience by sharing the fact that Madhusudan Das inspired Gopabandhu Das and created a feeling of nationalism and humanism in him. Concluding his remarks, he mentioned that Gopabandhu Das promoted two newspapers, ‘The Asha’ and ‘The Samaja,’ to keep the mass updated.

In vote of thanks, Dr. Prashanta Kumar Routray, Registrar, KISS-DU explained how the dream of Gopabandhu Das and Madhusudan Das has been translated into reality by Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Founder KISS and KIIT. He went on to add that different Research Chairs are working relentlessly to achieve new heights.
