Celebrating the critical role that music plays in representing the diverse traditions and cultures in India, the Cultural Wing of KISS Deemed to be University organized a virtual workshop on Music ‘The Rhythm & Pulse of Life’ on 13th January 2021.

Dr. Tripura Mishra, Head, Cultural Wing of KISS-DU inaugurated the event with a formal welcome, elaborating on the activities of the cultural wing of KISS-DU and highlighting the myriad ways in which music shapes the lives of tribal communities. She then introduced the invited speaker, Dr. Sangita Gosain, eminent vocalist and Director, Odissi Research Centre, Bhubaneswar.

In her engaging keynote session, Dr. Gosain expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards Dr. Samanta, whose tireless efforts were instrumental in giving KISS the distinction of being the world’s only tribal university that prioritizes preservation and nurturing of diverse tribal cultures, music and dance. She continued to elaborate upon the integral role that music plays in human life – from birth till death. Quoting Swami Shivananda, she expressed her firm belief that music is transcendental and ageless. Dr. Gosain continued on to share technicalities of music, explaining how the seven basic notes of music can create innumerable songs.  The session was quite spell binding with many melodious quotes and stanzas from popular Odia folk songs.

Explaining that humanity derives music from nature, Prof. Harekrishna Satapathy, Advisor, KISS-DU expressed appreciation for Dr. Gosain’s beautiful deliberation. He opined that the workshop will continue to inspire KISSians to appreciate the role that music plays in making our lives blissful.

Dr. Prashanta Kumar Routray, Registrar, KISS DU articulated that “Art and culture have been an integral part of KISS since its inception”, and explained that KISS-DU will soon integrate art and music within the curriculum. He expressed confidence that this move will widen the horizon of opportunities for the students of KISS to be self reliant. He also invited Dr. Gosain to conduct a day-long workshop on music for the children when they return to campus.

The workshop ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Debahuti Pattnaik, Member, Cultural Committee and Lecturer in Odia, KISS.
