World Breastfeeding Week-2021 Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility

The Department of Community Medicine, KIMS organised various community outreach and awareness programmes in the Urban Health Training Centre, Niladri Vihar and Routine Immunisation Clinic, KIMS on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week-2021, which is being observed from 1st to 7th August, 2021.  

The programmes were conducted in tune with the event objectives of the year set by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). The interns, Dr. Puja, Dr. Rahul Sahoo, Dr. Rajesh Nanda, Dr. Rahul Goswani, Dr. Pratikshya, Dr. Stitipragyan, Dr. T. Sai and Dr. Zahar along with the postgraduate students were actively involved.

Dr. Ansuman Kar and Dr. Tapas Ranjan Senapati under the guidance of Dr. Ipsa Mohapatra, Associate Professor in the UHTC carried out the week-long Community Awareness campaigns in the slums of Niladri Vihar, where the lactating and nursing mothers were explained about the benefits and need for continued breastfeeding . As Maternity Protection is key to enable breastfeeding and empower parents for a successful implementation of recommended breastfeeding practices, regular checkups and health education activities were also carried out in the slums.

At the Immunization Clinic, poster presentations were done by the interns, Dr. Rubina Pany, Dr. Rutuparna Panda, Dr. Sahil Godara, Dr. Samikshya Gupta, Dr. Vishal Chaudhury and Dr Vivek Kudawla. Postgraduate students, Dr. Smriti Madhusikta and Dr. Pragyan Paramita under the guidance of Dr. S. Suneeti Kanyari, Asst. Professor also presented posters on the theme of the year. As pregnancy and lactation make working women and their families vulnerable, expectant and nursing mothers require special protection to prevent any possible damage to their infants’ health. They also need adequate time to give birth, to recover, and to nurse their children.

The events were supervised and attended by Prof. Dr. B. K. Behera, HOD, Community Medicine; Prof, Dr, Sonali Kar, Prof, Dr, S. R. Nayak, Dr. Alpana Mishra, Dr. Krishna Mishra, Dr. Snigdha Singh, Dr. Bidisa Sarkar, Dr. Aparajita Mishra, Dr. B. Laksmi Priyanka, Dr.Varsha Srivastava. The events were supported by Mr.Swarup Roy Choudhury, Ms. Shradhanjali Nayak, Mr.Surjya Narayan Mohapatro, Ramesh, Mrs. Nibedita Tripathy and Ms Nilima.
