A two-day hands-on workshop on ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for acute pain management was inaugurated on June 17 at KIMS. The event was in collaboration with the International Network for Critical Ultrasound (INCUS), a global movement championing real-time diagnostics in emergency and critical care.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. (Dr.) Siddhartha Mishra, Professor and Head of Emergency Medicine at KIMS, highlighted the need for immediate and effective pain relief in emergency scenarios. Nerve blocks, especially ultrasound-guided ones, can offer targeted and rapid pain alleviation, he said, stressing the importance of hands-on training for young doctors in this critical area.

Officiating Medical Superintendent of KIMS, Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar Patnaik, noted that the focus of the workshop was on acute pain management using guided nerve blocks, which is a game-changer in emergency medicine practices.

Prof. (Dr.) R. C. Das reiterated KIMS’s strong emphasis on emergency medicine, pointing out the significance of managing trauma-related pain through advanced techniques like nerve blocks. “Pain is one of the biggest challenges in trauma care. The focus on guided nerve block is thus a very important step,” he observed.

Prof. (Dr.) Sukhdev Nayak, Head of Emergency Medicine at IMS and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, hailed the workshop as a first-of-its-kind in Odisha. He also touched on the potential role of artificial intelligence in studying pain management and advocated for a holistic approach to pain that includes physical, mental, and even social dimensions.
Dr. Sanjeev Bhoi, Head of INCUS World, shared insights from a joint AIIMS and NITI Aayog study which revealed significant gaps in emergency medicine infrastructure and training across India. “We found that systems in both government and private hospitals were not adequately prepared. This led to policy changes, especially in training frontline workers. It’s important for institutions to start DNB programmes in emergency medicine,” he urged.

Advisor to the Founder, Dr. R. N. Samanta, addressed the gathering and highlighted the visionary support of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS. He spoke about Dr. Samanta’s simple lifestyle and his consistent encouragement of academic and medical excellence through initiatives like this workshop.

The guest faculties from Department of Emergency of different Institute were felicitated during the programme. The Department of Anatomy, KIMS along with the Department of Emergency Medicine, KIMS are the prime partners where Dr. Prajyan Paramita Samanta HOD Anatomy KIMS pivoted the workshop to make it a huge success.

Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Benazir Maherin, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the event’s inaugural session. The workshop helped to enhance the clinical proficiency of medical professionals and further strengthen emergency care delivery in the region.
