He spoke on the surgical subject, “Journey of Army Surgeon with Inguinal Hernia Repair-Past, Present & Future”, to enlighten PG students as well surgeons all around the state.

He spoke about the groin hernia surgery and how it has changed. Dr. Pujari attended the advanced course in Hernia Surgery at the Hernia Institute of Miami, Florida, USA in 2003, and learned a special method of Hernia Repair using Mesh–PHS (Prolene Hernia System). He demonstrated live the same PHS Mesh Repair at Command Hospital Chandigarh and Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla. Now how he has learned Laparoscopic hernia repair, its advantages and disadvantages. He spoke about the future of Robotic Hernia Surgery.

He gave the importance of inguinal hernia in rural Odisha, where it is extremely common and often neglected for decades. Most of the patients present with large irreducible hernias, with co-morbidities requiring meticulous repair. Standardizing groin hernia repairs and improving outcomes require many questions to be answered. Best operative techniques should have the following attributes: low incidence of complications (pain and recurrence), relatively easy to learn, fast recovery, reproducible results, and cost effectiveness. Treatment of groin hernia patients will improve if we honour all stakeholders’ interests (patients, hospitals, surgeons and society), Dr. Pujari stated.
