KIMS Doctor Attends Harvard Medical School Course on Thyroid and Parathyroid Gland Surgery

Surgery of the Thyroid and Parathyroid glands has undergone a paradigm shift in terms of the surgical techniques and also increasing emphasis on non-operative management of low risk well differentiated thyroid cancer. Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts conducts a world renowned course on the above subject every year since 1996. This course aims to meet practice gaps by providing state-of-the-art focused presentations by world-class experts on various aspects of Thyroid and Parathyroid disease.

This year it was the first time the course was conducted on virtual mode from 6th to 8th November 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The cumulative duration was about 27 hours. Dr. Sabyasachi Parida, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, KIMS applied to Dr. Gregory Randolph, Professor of Head and Neck Surgery, Claire and John Bertucci Endowed Chair in Thyroid Surgical Oncology, Harvard Medical School, for the course and was admitted to it. It was a well planned, designed, and executed program with adequate emphasis on embracing the current understanding of Thyroid and Parathyroid glands disease and its management, while also getting well versed with the latest research and surgical techniques to improve outcomes. World experts from different Continents and from the USA gave much valuable lectures. It also included case discussions.

Three orations were also held during the course, by world leaders in their respective fields of expertise, namely:

Kocher Lecture: RF Ablation of Thyroid Nodules and Cancer: Dr. Jung Hwan Baek, Seoul, South Korea

Cope Lecture: Auto-fluorescence and ICG Angiography- State of the Art: Dr. Frederic Triponez, Geneva, Switzerland.

Codman Quality Lecture: Surgically induced Hyperparathyroidism and its mortality: Dr. Anders Bergenfelz, Sweden.

Dr. Sabyasachi Parida has been successfully performing advanced Thyroid and Parathyroid gland surgeries for the past seven years with minimal morbidity and excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes. This includes minimally invasive Thyroid and Parathyroid gland surgeries.  He is also the only doctor in Eastern India to have successfully performed Total Thyroidectomy and bilateral cervical lymph node dissection, Central compartment lymph node clearance by submandibular approach. He intends to extend the benefits of the rich learning experience to the best possible benefit of patients.
