Inauguration of Orthopaedic Saw Bone Skill Lab at KIMS
An Orthopaedic Saw Bone Skill Lab was inaugurated at KIMS on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. This is the first such saw bone skill lab in a medical college in the entire state on a permanent basis. The skill lab set up is supposed to provide adequate competency and hands-on experience to the students before they venture into real surgical practice.
Department of Orthopedics, KIMS also organized a skill development workshop for the postgraduate trainees. The event, organized under the guidance of Dr. Tanmoy Mohanty, Professor & HOD and Dr. Debashish Mishra, was inaugurated by Maj. Gen. Dr. P. K. Pattnaik, VSM, Director General & Principal, KIMS in the presence of AVM Prof. R. C. Dash, Vice-Principal.
The programme included three modules on the basic techniques of fracture fixation. First, the students were given short core knowledge lectures. This was followed by a saw-bone skill video demonstration by Dr. Shakti Das, Dr. Saswat Samant and Dr. K. Srikant. Finally, the event concluded with a hands-on training session where post graduate students worked on saw-bone models individually. Other faculty members present at the event included Prof. Santosh Rath, Dr. Sumanyu Tripathy, Dr. Aditya Panda, Dr Saurav Narayan Nanda, Dr. Bibhudutta Sahoo, Dr. Sandeep Pradhan, Dr. Mohammad Shadaab, Dr. Ashok Gachhayat, Dr. VJ Govind and Dr. Debobrata Saha (Organising Secretary).
The skill workshop would also be of value to senior surgeons as a method to try difficult surgical procedures and newer instrumentations before being used on patients.
The technical sessions were followed by Teachers’ Day celebrations organized by the students body which included the felicitation of Professor S. N. Mohanty, former HOD (Orthopaedics) for his immense contribution to the development of the teaching programmes in the department.
