on “Comprehensive Geriatric Care: Advancing Healthcare for the Elderly”
The Department of Community Medicine, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), successfully organized a two-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on the theme “Comprehensive Geriatric Care: Advancing Healthcare for the Elderly” on 11th and 12th July, 2025. The event was conducted in collaboration with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS).
The CME was held under the leadership and supervision of Prof. (Dr.) SonaliKar, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, KIMS and the Organizing Secretary of the event. The academic event witnessed keen participation of the fraternity of Community Medicine both from KIMS as well as across Odisha, and invited speakers from AIIMS, Jodhpur. The event also attracted public health experts from the State Government, experts in NGOs and public health institutes from Odisha.
The inaugural session was held on 11th July, 2025 and was graced by AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das, Dean and Principal, KIMS; Prof. (Dr.) Lalatendu Mohanty, Vice Principal, KIMS; and Prof. (Dr.) Manas Ranjan Behera, Medical Superintendent, KIMS. The program commenced with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony and Vandana, followed by a formal introduction by the dignitaries. Prof. (Dr.) Sonali Kar welcomed all attendees and outlined the concept and vision of the workshop, emphasizing the growing need for focused geriatric care in the Indian healthcare system. A special invitation was extended to the President of NAMS, Prof. (Dr.) Digambar Behera, during the session.
The academic proceedings began with a pre-test conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Ipsa Mohapatra and Prof. (Dr.) S. Suneeti Kanyari. The first session on “National Programme for Health Care of Elderly, Functionality and Quality of Life, Geriatric Syndromes” was delivered by Prof.(Dr.) Pankaj Bhardwaj from AIIMS, Jodhpur and was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Vikas Bhatia, Prof. (Dr.) Lalatendu Mohanty, and Prof. (Dr.) Krishna Kar, with Prof. (Dr.) Basanta Kumar Behera as the facilitator. This was followed by a session on “Approach to Common Symptoms in Elderly” by Prof.(Dr.) SonaliKar, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Sonu H Subba, Prof. (Dr.) Shubhransu Patro, Prof. (Dr.) Kaushik Mishra, and Prof. (Dr.) Sumitra Patnaik. The session was facilitated by Prof.(Dr.) Smruti Ranjan Nayak.
The discussion on “Cardiovascular System Disorders” featured Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Surender Deora from AIIMS, Jodhpur, alongside Brig. Prof. (Dr.) Ambika Prasad Mohanty, Dr.Sudhir Kumar Parida, Prof. (Dr.) PanchananSahoo, and Prof. (Dr.) Lisa Sarangi, and was facilitated by Prof. (Dr.) IpsaMohapatra and Prof. (Dr.) SuneetiKanyari. The afternoon session addressed “Psychiatric Problems in Elderly,” led by Prof. (Dr.) Naresh Nebhinani from AIIMS, Jodhpur, with chairpersons Dr.Sangeeta Das, Prof. (Dr.) SuchetaPriyabadini, and Prof. (Dr.) Lipilekha Patnaik, Prof. (Dr.) SatyajitSundar Ray. The facilitators for this session were Prof. (Dr.) IpsitaDebata and Prof. (Dr.) Alpana Mishra.
The next session on “Orthopedic Disorders in Elderly” was conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Sumit Banerjee of AIIMS, Jodhpur, and chaired by AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das, Prof. (Dr.) MinakshiMohanty, Prof. (Dr.) Satyajit Pattnaik, and Dr. Jay Singh Khetri. Dr. Sai Chandan Das and Dr.Avinandan Sarkar facilitated this session. This was followed by a discussion on “Vaccination in Elderly,” led by Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Swayam Pragyan Parida from AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, chaired byDr. Ramya Pinnamaneni, Prof. (Dr.) Mohua Biswas, Prof. (Dr.) Archana Patnaik, and Dr.SuchitraHaldar, and the facilitators were Dr.PremSagar Panda and Dr. Snigdha Singh. The day concluded with a panel discussion titled “Repositioning of Geriatric Care in the Undergraduate Curriculum and Intern Training: A Faculty Perspective in Medical Colleges,” by Prof. (Dr.) Mohua Biswas, Dr.DebasishPandit, Prof. (Dr.) Dhaneswari Jena, Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Manish Taywade, and Prof. (Dr.) Satyajit Pattnaik, and facilitated by Dr. Krishna Mishra and Dr. Geeta Chand Acharya.
The second day of the CME, 12th July 2025, began with a session on “ICOPE Screening” by Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Bhardwaj and Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Gupta from AIIMS, Jodhpur. The session was chaired by Mrs. SwarnaMisra, Prof. (Dr.) Ashwini Kar, and Prof. (Dr.) AurobindoSamantaray, with facilitation by Dr. Sai Chandan Das and Dr.Geeta Chand Acharya. The next session focused on “Endocrinology and Nutrition in the Elderly” by Prof. (Dr.) Bharat Kumar from AIIMS, Jodhpur, and was chaired by Dr. Devadarshini Sahoo and Prof. (Dr.) ShobhaMalini, with Prof. (Dr.) SmrutiRanjanNayak and Dr.PremSagar Panda as facilitators.
Another session on “Palliative Care in Elderly” was delivered by Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Srikanth Srinivasan from AIIMS, Jodhpur, and chaired by Dr. Sridhar MurlidharraoKadam, Dr. Madan Pradhan, Prof. (Dr.) Dhaneswari Jena, and Prof. (Dr.) Niyati Das. The facilitators were Prof. (Dr.) Basanta Kumar Behera and Dr. Krishna Mishra. This was followed by a hands-on session on “ICOPE” led by Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Bhardwaj, Addl. Prof. (Dr.) SurenderDeora, and Addl. Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Gupta, with participation from all delegates.
The concluding segment of the CME included a reflection, feedback, and post-test session facilitated by Prof. (Dr.) Ipsa Mohapatra, Prof. (Dr.) Ipsita Debata, Prof. (Dr.) Alpana Mishra, and Prof. (Dr.) Suneeti Kanyari. The valedictory and vote of thanks was graced by honorable dignitaries including AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das; Prof. (Dr.) Shubhransu Patro; and Prof. (Dr.) ManasRanjanBehera.

The CME proved to be an enriching and academically stimulating experience, fostering meaningful dialogue on the challenges and solutions in geriatric care. The event stood as a testament to interdisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, and a shared commitment to strengthening elderly healthcare in India.
