World Kidney Day 2021 Observed at KIMS

The World Kidney Day 2021 was observed at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) under the aegis of Indian Academy of Nephrology & Odisha Nephrology Forum on 10th March 2021. The program was inaugurated by Shri Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Editor, The Sambad and Hon’ble MLA, Khandapara in the presence of Dr. H. K. Mohanty, Vice Chancellor, KIIT Deemed to be University; AVM Dr. R. C. Das, Vice Principal, KIMS; Dr. Bibekananda Panda, General Secretary, Odisha Nephrology Forum and Prof Dr. S. C. Dash, Professor Emeritus. The theme of World Kidney Day 2021 was “Living Well with Kidney Disease”.

The program began with one-minute silence to pay tribute to the departed souls Dr. C. R. Kar and Dr. R. N. Sahoo, eminent Nephrologists of Odisha. Appreciating the efforts by Dr. S. C. Dash in organizing World Kidney Day every year, Shri Soumya Ranjan Patnaik inspired the budding doctors to take up the super-specialization and serve the people of Odisha and contribute to growth of the state as well as KIMS. Prof H. K. Mohanty inspired the gathering to learn the advancements in the field of Nephrology. AVM Dr. R.C. Das highlighted the importance of observing the Kidney Day and learning newer aspects from the expert speakers. Prof. Dr. S. C. Dash welcomed the dignitaries and participants, while Dr. Bibekananda Panda proposed the vote of thanks.

The scientific sessions commenced with the talk by Prof. Dr. S. C. Dash on “Living Well with Kidney Disease”. It was chaired by Brig. Dr. Ambika Mohanty, Medical Superintendent, KIMS and Dr. Siddhartha Mishra, Prof, Department of Medicine, KIMS. Dr. Shashi Bhushan Rout, HOD Department of Physiology, SCB Medical College, Cuttack spoke of the topic, “Should CKD be Considered as Coronary Artery Disease Equivalent”. A session on “Rituximab Therapy in Nephrotic Syndrome” was taken by Dr. Nisith Mohanty, Consultant Nephrologist. Dr. Bibekananda Panda spoke on “Anemia Management, Risk & Mortality in CKD”.

Dr. Sukant Das, Consultant Nephrology, AMRI delivered a talk on “AKI – Restriction of Intravenous Chloride May Reduce Incidence of AKI in Critically Ill Patients”. The last session was taken by Dr. Sandip Panda, Nephrologist, AIIMS Bhubaneswar on “Re-classification of Vasculitis and Introduction of Biologicals”. The scientific session ended with an interesting video by Dr. D. S. Ray, Director, Kidney Transplantation, R.N. Tagore Hospital, Kolkata on the “Effects of Yoga on Organ Transplantation”.

A rally was also taken out by the students of KIMS, KIDS & KINS to raise public awareness on kidney disease, its prevention and treatment.
