The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, KIIT Deemed to be University organized  two day workshop on Third Space Endoscopy on 19th and 20th January, 2019. It was conducted by Dr. Vikas Singla from Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi, who is a pioneer in this field.

Third space is a potential space within the wall (sub-mucosal space) of esophagus, stomach and intestines. Earlier, inadvertent entry into this space was considered as a complication. However, in the present era of advanced endoscopy, a sub-mucosal tunnel is created deliberately by passing an endoscope by mouth or rectum to perform various endoscopic surgeries like Endoscopic Sub-mucosal Dissection (ESD), Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) and Sub-mucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection (STER). These procedures are intended to treat various conditions like small tumors, motility disorders like Achalasia Cardia without putting any incision on skin.

Achalasia Cardia is a swallowing disorder characterized by high pressure due to thick and overactive circular muscle layer at the gastro-esophageal junction accompanied with loss of normal esophageal peristalsis. This disorder is now increasingly being treated by the POEM procedure. A sub-mucosal third space tunnel is created within the wall of esophagus and the circular muscle layer is incised by the endoscope to the break the increased pressure without any incision on skin. As compared to the surgery (Heller’s Myotomy), it has rapid recovery and patient can resume all normal activities from the second day of the procedure.

This was an initiative  of KIMS to provide all the high end medical services to patients of Eastern India through experience and expertise. Besides, the above procedures, the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology also provides all the state-of-the-art outpatient, inpatient and endoscopic services. It is headed by Prof. A.C. Anand under the able guidance of Prof. S.K. Acharya (Pro Chancellor, KIIT Deemed to be University); Prof. Y.K. Chawla (Chairman of Academics, KIMS). Besides, Dr. S.C. Panigrahi, Dr. B. Mallick, Dr. Preetam Nath and Dr. D. Praharaj are other faculty members of this Department.
