The Institute’s areas of focus include ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alloys, ceramics, and related disciplines. Each year in November, IIM, in collaboration with reputed academic and industry partners, organizes the Annual Technical Meet and International Symposium, regarded as a paramount conference in the field of metallurgy and materials engineering. The conference typically features a technical exhibition with the participation of over 50 industries.

In the 77 years of the history of IIM, Odisha has hosted the ATM three times – twice in Rourkela (in 1966 and 1982) and once in Bhubaneswar in 2001. This is the second time that IIM ATM is going to be organized in Bhubaneswar jointly by IIM Chapters (Sambalpur, Angul, Bhubaneswar), Hindalco Industries Ltd and KIIT.
