A one-month Summer Training Program on “Modeling and Analysis of Dental Implant Prosthetics through Finite Element Methods” for the dentistry students and professionals was inaugurated at the School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT-DU on 16th May 2022.

Inaugurating the training program, Professor (Dr.) Aswini Kumar Kar, Principal, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) underlined the importance of learning Finite Element Methods (FEM) by BDS and MDS students for their medical research. This first-of-its-kind initiative in India and abroad by KIIT School of Mechanical Engineering will help dentistry students in collaborative and quality research, he informed. Though many students performed their research works with the help of expertise from this School, this generalized program will be highly beneficial to both the institutes for improving interdisciplinary research, Professor Kar stated.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor (Dr.) Bharat Chandra Routara, Dean, KIIT School of Mechanical Engineering urged the participants to take full advantage of this program, gain fundamental knowledge about Finite Element Methods and utilize it in their case to case basis research problems. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by the organizers from the School.

Professor (Dr.) Purna Chandra Mishra, Dean (Research) cited many examples of basic application of the Finite Element Method in solving dentistry problems. The experimental and clinical research being more expensive, doctors can make trials with FEM simulations for the problems including exploration of new implant materials, osseointegration, tissue engineering, implant structure and design, he said. Professor Mishra shared his expectations from the Summer Training Program and added that platforms like these would ensure dentistry students’ personal and professional career development.

Dr. Chinmay Kundu, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering briefed the participants about the training modules, while Mr. Siba Padarabinda Behera, Coordinator proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. Manoj Ukamanal and Prof. Smita Rani Panda were also present.
