KIIT School of Fashion Technology Organizes National Webinar on ‘Natural Fibers, Fabrics & dyes for Sustainability of Hand loom Textile in next decade.

KSOFT conducted a open Webinar on “Natural fibers, Fabrics & dyes for Sustainability of Handloom Textile in next decade” on 31st of August 2021. The webinar was graced by Dr R.G.Paneersevlam, former director of Indian institute of Handloom Technology, Varanasi and Dr. N. N. Mohapatra, Business Head Shree Puspak Chemical and fertilizer Ltd. Mumbai. The two and half an hour session was quite interesting and was full of attractive learning elements.

Welcoming the guests and participants, Prof. Bauri Raula, Course Coordinator of KSOFT provided a valuable outlook on the significance of sustainability textile and fashion trends and their prior rising demands. 

Speaking at the first hour, Dr. Paneerslevam started from the handloom and powerloom fabrics and how they are different from each other. He puts lights on the significance of handloom and makes the audience go through the tour of India associated with different types of sarees and he also focused on its ornamentation techniques. He talked about the Patola saree, Banarasi Brocade, Molakalmuru,  Gamcha, Durry weaving and tapestry weaving techniques. He discussed briefly about the various types of hand woven techniques used in handloom only such as. Extra weft floats intermittent, extra warp floats intermittent and weft interlocking.

Taking the second session of the webinar, Dr. N.N Mohapatra , explained about different types of sustainable fibers. He highlighted the extraction process, properties of banana fiber, coconut fiber and groundnut fiber, their various possible uses in apparel and textile products, and scope for growth of the production of these fibers. The next presentation was on the natural dye where he delivered details about the various natural dyes, auxiliaries needed and merits of using natural dyes.

Host of the webinar Prof. Bauri Raula, thanked the guests and said “it’s a very meaningful session for both the student and faculty present in the  webinar .” and asked the students to take initiatives toward the growth of sustainability and handloom works in the fashion and textile field. Ksoft faculty associates Mr. Parthasarathi Bal and Ms. Biswaranjita Mohaptra also shared their experience of taking the practical classes.
