KIMS Orthopaedics Dept Organizes Arthroplasty Conference
Renowned arthroplasty surgeons from across the country attended a two-day State-level conference at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) to deliberate the recent advances in arthroplasty or joint replacement surgery.
President of the Indian Arthroplasty Association Dr Rajeev Sharma joined as the chief guest at the 4th annual conference of the Odisha Arthroplasty Association (OAACON-2022) on September 17-18. The arthroplasty surgeons focused on the challenges and complexities of joint replacement surgeries. In most cases the recipients are elderly and, in many cases, they have other comorbidities like diabetes and arthritis.
“As the arthroplasty surgeries mostly involve implants with plastics and metals as their basic elements, chances of infections and complications due to degeneration in the materials would often lead to problems and the experts during this event discussed at length the issues faced by the patients,” explained Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, KIMS, Prof (Dr) Tanmoy Mohanty.
Prof Mohanty, who is also the president of the Odisha Arthroplasty Association, underlined that the exchange of ideas was also helpful for young arthroplasty surgeons to gain experience from their seniors. Nearly 20 guest faculties from across Odisha attended the conference. Prof Mohanty said that the conference discussed minimizing the risks and complications arising from the joint replacement surgeries. President of the Odisha Orthopaedic Association Dr RK Mohapatra, Secretary of the Association Dr Basanta Kumar Behera and Secretary of Odisha Arthroplasty Association Dr Debabrata Padhy spoke at the conference.
The invited faculties at this conference included Dr Dhansekhar Raja, Dr Anil Oommen, Dr Swarnendu Samanta, Dr Sanjeev Behera, Dr BS Murthy and Dr Subhransu S Mohanty. Dr Debasish Mishra was the organising chairman of the conference while Dr Saswat Samant was the organising secretary. Dr Saurav Narayan Nanda was the co-organising secretary and Dr Santosh Rath was the chairman of the Scientific Committee at the conference.
The event started with a PG-level quiz on arthroplasty with participants coming from the post-graduate medical colleges from across the State. Case-based discussions, didactic lectures and re-live surgeries kept the participants engaged.
