Library should be accessible to everyone, everywhere: Dr. Arun Sahoo

The 12th International CALIBER 2019 jointly organized by KIIT Deemed to be University and Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, Gandhinagar has been inaugurated at KIIT on 28th November.

Inaugurating the conference Dr. Arun Kumar Sahoo, Minister, Higher Education,    Agriculture And Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development, Govt of Odisha said, the library should be accessible to everyone and everywhere. Earlier students were frequently going to the library for getting knowledge and information in various subjects. They spent hours in libraries. But today the scenario has been changed; students are hardly going to libraries. They have no patience to sit so many hours in the library, because getting information from the internet by using technology. The librarians, library scientists and library professionals who have joined this conference should think about how the library will be accessible to everyone and everywhere. Secondly awareness to access library should be created among young people, he added. 

Prof. Ashok Das, Vice-Chairperson, Higher Education Council, Govt. of Odisha said, the library is the temple for us. Today the concept of library is changing. Library should become a place of cultural transformation. Future library should be a place of comfort. Now a day, by using information technology we are getting information through internet. The library we access through internet is non authentic libraries. He proposed for a digital suitcase where all kinds of books in all subjects should be available in digital form and it should be affordable.

Prof. (Dr.) T. D. Kemparaju, Vice-Chancellor,   North Bengaluru University said, it is a leading event in the field of libraries and librarians. It is the age of change and transformation. The change is very fast and steady. The libraries are not out of this change. There are many new things which have come by using information technology in the field of library. The librarians and library professionals should be acquainted with the new technologies. They should be familiar with computation and artificial tools in this field.

Prof. Sasmita Samanta, Pro-Vice Chancellor, KIIT Deemed to be University said, KIIT Deemed to be University have been using all kinds of new and updated technologies in our libraries. One student can access any library of KIIT sitting in one place in the campus, she added.

Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Director INFLIBNET Centre highlighted various programmes have taken by INFLIBNET to update libraries and librarians. He informed about various Apps developed by INFLIBNET. Among others Prof. (Dr.) C. R. Karrisidappa Conference Director spoke on the occasion.

Dr. Bijayalaxmi Rautray, Organising Secretary and Chief Librarian KIIT Deemed to be University gave welcome address while Dr. H. G. Hosamani, Convener, CALIBER 2019 proposed vote of thanks.  Around 400 delegates are attending the conference which includes Vice Chancellor, Directors, Professors, Sr. Scientists, and Senior Library Professionals of the country as well as from abroad during 28-30 November.
