KIDS Conducts free Dental Screening and Treatment Camps

The Department of Public Health Dentistry of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), Bhubaneswar has collaborated with the HMV Driver Training Institute, Chhatia. Following the philosophy of the “Art of Giving” initiated by Founder, Prof. Dr. AchyutaSamanta, this initiative was led by Dr. JugajyotiPathi, Deputy Director (Administration), KIDS and Principal Dr. Aswini Kumar Kar. 

With mutual cooperation and coordination between the two institutes, under the guidance of Dr.  Ipseeta Menon (HoD and Professor) and the staff of Public Health Dentistry Department, free dental screening and treatment camps are scheduled to be organized on a weekly basis at the Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) Driver Training Institute, Chhatia.

All the patients attending the camp will be provided consultation, treatment procedures like teeth cleaning, tooth extractions and tooth fillings at free of cost. If the treatment cannot be performed at the camp site, those requiring advance treatment will be referred to KIDS. The weekly dental checkup camps to be conducted will be beneficial for the staff and students of the drivers’ training institute.

On January 5 a dental camp was organized at the HMV Driver Training Institute. The organizing team included Dr. KunalJha(Professor); Post Graduates – Dr. Spandita Das and Dr. Arnab Das along with a team of seven interns and two paramedical staff.

In all, 66 staff and students of the HMV Driver Training Institute were screened and rendered basic dental treatment like scaling and restorations. They were referred for other complex treatments like root canal treatment and prosthetic rehabilitation at KIDS.

The treatment done included – oral prophylaxis-35, restorations- 10 and one extraction.Four of the 66 patients examined had potentially malignant lesions and conditions like Leukoplakia and Oral Submucous Fibrosis. These individuals were referred to KIDS for tobacco counselling and other necessary treatment.

An educational oral hygiene health talk was given by Prof.(Dr.) KunalJha to all the staff and students of the HMV Driver Training Institute stressing on tooth decay, gum diseases, tobacco cessation and measures of prevention. This will be followed up by routine dental visits conducted fortnightly henceforth.

On January 12 those screened trainees of the HMV Driver Training Institute, who were referred to KIDS come for further treatment. They underwent oral prophylaxis, restoration and surgical extraction followed by tobacco counselling and health education.
