KINS Faculty Program of INC

Four faculty members from Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) – Mrs. Soumya Sonalika, Assistant Professor, Ms. Daini Sunita, Ms.Tulasi Hansadah and Mrs. Rashmiranjita Parhi, Tutors – participated in the 21st Batch Virtual Training for Capacity Building of Midwifery Faculties of various schools and colleges of Nursing organized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFP) from 31st August to 7th September 2021. Total 14 eminent speakers delivered scientific sessions at the programme.   

On the first day, two sessions on “Educational Methodology” were taken by Dr. Manju Vasta, Director NRSC, Gurgaon & Former Principal, College of Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi and Dr. Jyoti Sarin, Dean, Faculty of Nursing Maharishi, Markendeswar Deemed to be University. Second day session on “Midwifery Education and Practice” was taken by Dr. Latha R., Retd. Joint Director of Nursing Education, DME Kerala, while Maj. Gen. Elizabeth John, ADG (Retd.), Army Headquarters, Delhi presented on “Evidence-based Antenatal Care”.  

Dr. Judith, Associate Dean, Manipal College of Nursing spoke on “Evidenced-based Management of Antenatal Complications” on the third day of the programme. Prof. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, HOD and Professor of OBG Nursing, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore took the second session on “Evidenced-based Intrapartum Care and Management of Complications”. The fourth day of the training programme had sessions on “Evidence-based Newborn Care and Management of Complications” and “Evidenced-based Postpartum Care and Management of Complications”, which were taken by Dr. Ash P. Shetty, Professor-cum-Principal & Chief Nursing Officer, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and Prof. Ammi Menon, Professor of OBG Nursing, Gujarat Institute of Nursing Education and Research, Ahmadabad.    

On the fifth day, Preeti Mathew presented on “Different Contraceptives Available in India”, while Mrs. Mitali Adhikari spoke on the topic “Safe Abortion Services and Encourage Voluntary Family Planning Services”. The third session was conducted by Ida Nirmal, Associate Prof., CMC Vellore on “COVID-19 Vaccines”. Dr. Sudha Reddi, Principal, KLE Institute of Nursing Sciences, Deemed University, Belgaum discussed on “Adolescent and Young People’s SRH” on the concluding day. The second session on “Gender based violence and violence against women” was conducted by Dr. Manju Vatsa, Director NRSC Gurgaon.

Mrs. K. S. Bharati, Joint Secretary, INC and Ms. Pearl, Training Moderator, INC, UNFPA also spoke on the occasion. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. K. S. Bharati, Joint Secretary, INC. There were approximately 190 virtual participants from various Schools and Colleges of Nursing in India.

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized the first series of Guest Faculty Lectures on “Research Proposal for Grant” on the 27th August 2021 to imbibe research culture among the faculty members. Dr. L. Gopichandran, Associate Professor, CON AIIMS New Delhi was the distinguished speaker of the talk series. On behalf of the KINS fraternity, Prof. Mrs. Amarita Lenka, Principal CON extended her greetings to Dr. Gopichandran and shed light on the significance of the topic to be discussed. In his session, Dr. Gopichandran explained in depth about the proper way of writing a research proposal for receiving grants. He emphasized on finding the need and problem of the community and then finding the solution in order to formulate the problem statement which must serve the community. He also focused on different funding agencies which provide grants for various studies. It was an informative and motivational session for the faculty members. At the end of the session, he interacted with the faculty members and answered their queries.

NSS Wing of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) observed ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ on 14th August, 2021. The ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ was announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 2016 to spread the message of Nationwide Cleanliness and Hygiene and to increase the participation of every individual under the Swachhta Abhiyan,

The NSS volunteers and faculties of KINS participated in cleaning the ladies hostel premises under the guidance of Ms. Daini Sunita, Tutor, NSS Program Officer. The volunteers participated enthusiastically in cleaning the surroundings of the hostel, including balconies, campus and garden. Volunteers created awareness among housekeeping staff on cleanliness and a healthy environment. They also exhibited handmade crafts with waste materials. NSS volunteer, Saimoshree Maji, B.Sc. 2nd year made a craft of sofa set from disposed match boxes and Soumili Pramanik, B.Sc. 2nd year made crafts of beautiful African dolls from waste papers. The event created awareness and motivated all to join hands for ensuring cleanliness of the surroundings.

On the occasion of Breastfeeding Week, the Department of Child Health Nursing, Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), KIIT DU, in association with SOMI Odisha Chapter, conducted a quiz competition on Breastfeeding and New-born care practices among postnatal mothers in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward of KIMS. The Quiz was moderated by Mrs. Rashmiranjita Parhi and Mrs. Sweta Rani Dalai, Tutor, KINS. About 20 postnatal mothers participated at the event .The mothers getting 1st and 2nd positions were awarded prizes with appreciation by Dr. Manas Ku. Nayak, Neonatologist, KIMS and Mrs. Surekha Mohapatra, Nursing Supervisor, Dept. of O&G, KIMS.

Ms Daini Sunita, Tutor, KINS, on behalf of KINS family, expressed her gratitude to Dept. of O&G staff, NICU staff, faculty members and all the students from M.Sc. (N) 1st and 2nd year for their active participation to make the event successful.

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized a Journal Club presentation on 6th August 2021 on virtual platform. The journal club presentation is a regular gathering of scholars to discuss a scientific paper found in a research journal and then the summary of the chosen paper is presented by the group.

The first paper was presented by Ms. Susmita Dey, M.Sc(N) 2nd year student on “Outcome in multifocal pregnancy: A cohort study.” The second presentation was on “The Risk of Micro Aspiration during Oral Care in Mechanically Ventilated Patients – A Randomized Cross-Over Study Comparing Two Different Suction Protocol”, presented by Ms. Anusikta Panda. The last presenter, Ms. Bishnupriya Lenka presented a study on “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2(SARS CoV-2) vaccination in pregnancy, measures of immunity and Placental Histopathology”. The selected papers were chosen from reputed journals. After each session experts offered their criticism and the presenter also explained the strong and weak points of the study.

The program was attended by 30 participants including all the faculty members of KINS and postgraduate nursing students.

The NSS wing of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized an awareness program on “Importance of Breastfeeding” in the OBG & Pediatric OPD of KIMS on 5th August 2021 on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2021. The awareness program was conducted by NSS volunteers of B.Sc. Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing students (Pediatric & OBG Department) of KINS under the mentor-ship of NSS Program Officers, Ms. Daini Sunita and Ms. Truptimayee Das, Tutors, KINS.

The volunteers created awareness regarding “Exclusive breastfeeding, Duration of feeding, Latching, Positioning, and Benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby”. They demonstrated through a role play (Vikas Mantra) by use of power-point, flash card, and leaflet. It was a great opportunity and pleasing experience for NSS volunteers to interact, educate and distribute leaflets to mothers in the Pediatric and Postnatal wards of KIMS. The Program concluded with refreshment and distribution of masks among mothers.

A Scientific Journal Club is a dedicated meeting, where researchers gather to discuss publications from peer-reviewed journals. These meetings help researchers keep up with current findings, exercise their critical thinking skills, and improve their presentation and debate abilities.

Kalinga Institute of  Nursing Sciences, KIIT-DU conducted a Journal Club presentation on 5th July 2021. The Program started with faculties and students of M.Sc.(N) 2nd yr on a virtual platform. The  session consisted of two presentations by 2nd year Post Graduate students. The first speaker Ms. Madhusmita Panda, M.Sc. 2nd yr presented the research article on “Education of self-radial pulse palpation and a trial fibrillation sign and symptoms’ ‘.

After the presentation, the floor was open for discussion and critiques. The second speaker Ms. Prajnya Paramita Bhoi, M.Sc. 2nd yr. presented the article on “The effect of three different methods on venipuncture pain and anxiety in children: Distraction cards, Virtual Reality, and Buzzy(Randomized controlled trial)” followed by critique and discussion.

Such presentations can improve reading habits and gain practice in critiquing and appraising research; critique helps the researcher to get insight into research problems and gain depth of knowledge in the research process. The programme was concluded with thanks to all

A Research Critique is an analysis of a research undertaking that focuses on its strengths and limitations. Journal Club presentation is an educational forum to appreciate new knowledge, create awareness of current research findings and appraise research.

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), KIIT-DU conducted a Journal Club Presentation attended by faculty members and students of M.Sc. (N) 1styr and 2nd yr on virtual platform on 18th June 2021.

The session consisted of two presentations by 2nd year post graduate students. The first speaker Mrs. Minu Rani Mahato, Msc. 2nd yr presented a research article on “Effectiveness of cycled lighting in neonatal intensive care unit on weight and cardio respiratory function in preterm infants”. After the presentation, the floor was open for discussion and critiques.

The second speaker Mr. Partha Sarathi Jena, Msc 2nd yr presented an article on “Effectiveness of Modified Constraint-Induced movement therapy in stroke patients based on severity” followed by critique and discussion. Such presentation and critique help the researcher to get insight into research problems and gain depth of knowledge in the research process. The programme was concluded with thanks to all.

NSS Unit of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Science (KINS), KIIT-DU organized a webinar on the theme “Nurses: Past to Present a Vision for Future Health Care” to celebrate 75 Years of Independence as part of “Bharat Ka Amrut Mahostav” on 31st May, 2021. The Program commenced with lighting of the lamp by Prof. Kalyani Rath, which was followed by the NSS Anthem.

In her welcome address, Prof. (Mrs.) Amarita Lenka, Principal, KINS elaborated on the theme and compared Nurses with angels, while highlighting their importance in the Healthcare System.

Dr. (Mrs) Kajal Parashar, Deputy Director CEC, Program Coordinator, KIIT NSS Bureau, Associate Professor, KIIT School of Applied Sciences asked Nurses to be compassionate, focus on Patient Counselling while providing care with a healing touch.

Mrs. Geetarani Nayak, Asst. Professor, College of Nursing, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, who was the Special Invitee for this webinar, she took participants on a virtual tour. Nursing is not confined to the four walls of the Hospital & Patient Care, it has been elevated to an era of Substantial Independence, she stated, while sharing her past experiences as a NSS Volunteer. 

NSS volunteers of KINS enthralled the audience with their performance and virtually paid tribute to all frontline Covid warriors across the Globe.

Ms. Daini Sunita, Tutor, Programme Officer of KINS, NSS Unit proposed the vote of thanks. The program was anchored by Ms. Bhavya Verma & Supriya Singh Chandel, 2ndyear B.Sc. Nursing Students of KINS (NSS volunteers).  Around 300 participants attended the webinar.

Indian Nursing Council (INC) in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFP) organized its 16th Batch Virtual Training for Capacity Building of Midwifery Faculties of various Schools and Colleges of Nursing in India from 18th to 25th May 2021. Four faculties from Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) – Prof. Niyati Das, Vice-Principal, Mrs. Purnima Sahoo, Asst. Professor, Ms. Sasmita Nayak and Ms. Pranati, Tutors – were nominated for the training program.

Providing an overview of the session, Dr. T. Dileep Kumar, President, INC & Fmr. Nursing Adviser to the Govt. of India explained the aims and objectives of the training. Mrs. K. S. Bharati, Joint Secretary, INC elaborated on the rules, regulations and guidelines to be followed, assignments and exercises to be done by the participants during the six-day training program, which had a pre-test and post-test on each day. In all, 14 eminent speakers delivered scientific sessions each day.

On the first day, the first session was conducted by Dr. Manju Vasta, Director NRSC, Gurgaon & Fmr. Principal, College of Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi on the topic “Educational Methodology Part – I”. She explained respectful Maternity Care, Transformation learning process, Relationship-based education, Mentorship and Competency-based learning. She also spoke on the application of the adult learning process on midwifery education. Dr. Jyoti Sarin, Dean, Faculty of Nursing Maharishi, Markendeswar Deemed to be University spoke on the topic “Latest Education Methodology Part – II’. She elaborated on Scenario-based learning, Experiential learning, Simulation-based learning, Media or Technology-based learning. She explained the SAVI approach used for effective learning and clinical evaluation of students through OSCE.

Taking a session on “Midwifery Education and Practice” on the second day, Dr. Latha R., Retd. Joint Director of Nursing Education, DME Kerala, elaborated on NPM educator and NPM specialist, their selection criteria, training period, job and responsibility. She also spoke on the core competency of midwifery educators. Mrs. Mithali Adhikari, President, Society of Midwives presented the topic, “Evidence-based Antenatal Care”. She explained the registration of pregnancy with MCP card, antenatal visit, and administration of TT/Dt to the antenatal mother as well as routine investigation.

On the third day, the first session was taken by Dr. Judith, Associate Dean, Manipal College of Nursing on “Evidenced-based Management of Antenatal Complications”. This was followed by a session on “Evidenced-based Intrapartum Care and Management of Complications” by Prof. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, HOD and Professor of OBG Nursing, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore. 

Speaking on the fourth day of the training programme, Dr. Ash P. Shetty, Professor-cum-Principal & Chief Nursing Officer, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar elaborated on the topic “Evidence-based Newborn Care and Management of Complications”. The topic “Evidenced-based Postpartum Care and Management of Complications” was explained by Prof. Ammi Menon, Professor of OBG Nursing, Gujarat Institute of Nursing Education and Research, Ahmadabad.

On the fifth day, the first session was conducted by Preeti Mathew on the topic, “Different Contraceptives Available in India”. She explained the topic with lots of information on methods, effects and procedures. The second session was taken by Major General Eliza Jones, on topic, “Safe Abortion Services and Encourage Voluntary Family Planning Services.” The third session was conducted by Ida Nirmal, Associate Prof., CMC Vellore on the topic “COVID-19 Vaccines”. She explained about the vaccines and its effect. She shared detailed information on all types of vaccines available in India.

On the concluding day, Dr. Sudha Reddi, Principal KLE Institute of Nursing Sciences, Deemed University, Belgaum discussed the topic, “Adolescent and Young People’s SRH”. Emphasizing youth-friendly SRH services, she tried to explain the issues in the society which prevent young couples from planning an early or unplanned pregnancy. The second session on “Gender based violence and violence against women” was conducted by Dr. Manju Vatsa, Director NRSC Gurugaon.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Lt. Col. Dr. Sarvjeet Kaur. There were approximately 94 virtual participants from various Schools and Colleges of Nursing in India.
