A two-day online workshop was conducted on 29th and 30th November 2021 as a part of Documentary Filmmaking course at the School of Mass Communication, KIIT Deemed to be University. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Anjali Monteiro and Prof. K. P. Jayasankar, former professors and deans of School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

Documentary films by Prof. Monteiro and Prof. Jayasankar have been screened across the world, winning 33 national and international awards. Their most recent awards for their Kachchh Trilogy are the Basil Wright Prize 2013 for So Heddan So Hoddan (Like Here Like There) and Jury’s commendation in the Intangible Culture category 2019 for A Delicate Weave at the Royal Anthropological Institute Festival, UK. They are also the author of A Fly in the Curry — Independent Documentary Film in India, Sage, 2016, which has won a Special Mention for the best book on cinema in the National Film Awards, 2016, and DigiNaka: Subaltern Politics and Digital Media in Post-Capitalist India, Anjali Monteiro, K.P. Jayasankar, Amit S. Rai (Eds.), Orient Black Swan, 2020.

The workshop was modelled to review the first drafts of student documentary films by the resource persons. There were a total of seven student films which were reviewed and detailed inputs were provided to work on the narrative and aesthetics of the films. The resource persons also covered a module on scriptwriting, mise-en-scene and ethics. The film So Heddan So Hoddan (Like Here Like There) by the resource persons was also screened as a part of the workshop, followed by a discussion.

The workshop saw full participation from the students, much of which was interactive. The resource persons were highly impressed with the works of the students and appreciated their active participation.

School of Electrical Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University conducted ‘KAMYA: Alumni Talk Series’ on 23rd November 2021. The speaker of the talk series was Dr. Rojalin Pradhan, Assistant Professor in the area of Operations Management at Alliance School of Business. Dr. Pradhan discussed the choice of the right career after B. Tech. and explained the real meaning of engineering. She also suggested connecting with own alma mater and keeping a role model in life.

Dr. Pradhan is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, from where she completed her Ph.D. degree in Technology Management. She also has a ME degree from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. She completed her B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from KIIT (2000-2004 batch). Her specialization is in technology adoption, digital transformation, risk perception and communication, consumer awareness, and telecom policy and regulation.

The session started with the welcome address by Dr. Arjyadhara Pradhan, Alumni Co-coordinator. Around 35 participants and many faculty members joined the session, which was full of participatory discussion among the students and speaker. Dr. Lipika Nanda proposed the vote of thanks.

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized the fifth lecture under the Guest Faculty Lecture Series on ‘Phototherapy’, a topic of Paediatric Nursing, on 27th November 2021. Delivering the lecture, Ms. Asli (BELLIKIL) YILMAZ, Assistant Professor, Amasya University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Child Health Nursing Department, Turkey explained various risk factors of newborn babies who are affected by neonatal jaundice. She mentioned the brief history, types, mode of actions, effectiveness, care of the baby with phototherapy. She showed some informative pictures of various new methods of phototherapy, like conventional one, two sided method and Electronic Blanket method. She also explained Nursing Care of babies receiving phototherapy in her country. At the end of session, Prof. (Mrs.) Niyati Das, Principal of KINS proposed a word of thanks.

Student counselling is an important aspect of the academic process. It helps students in assertive decision making in their career and relationships. KIIT has been playing a pivotal role in steering positive growth among the students through its Students Counselling Cell headed by Dr. Sucheta Priyabadini.

She conducted a counseling session for UG & PG Freshers of 2021-22 batch of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) on 29th November 2021. Citing real life examples of students of KIIT, she explained how the Students Counselling Cell has been supporting the young minds of this University. She interacted with the students, clarified their doubts and welcomed them again to this prestigious University. Dr. Priyabadini emphasized on having a strong Tutor-Mentor relationship and ways to strengthen this bond to help in solving students’ problems. “Necessity is the mother of invention” – is one of the many things that the participants could relate to from the alumni talk conducted on 26th November 2021 by KIIT School of Rural Management (KSRM).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prashant Singh of 2017-2019 batch of MBA (RM) narrated his student life at KSRM, the faculty members and his experiences throughout. He told the students that as aspiring rural and agri business managers they should think about ways to solve the problems that people are facing in the rural areas.  He also explained that failure is important in life as it makes one impartial to judgments and also gives strength to embrace adversity. The session ended with many interesting questions from the students and Mr. Singh concluded the talk by saying that he wants to see more entrepreneurs from KSRM.

Mr. Prashant Singh pursued his B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering from KIIT Deemed to be University and worked for Plancess Edu Solutions. He also initiated a startup called HostelHaat in Bhubaneswar. He currently works at TechnoServe as Senior Associate. His major working areas are strengthening FPC and agri-input and output business. He is presently working with Digital Saathi, an initiative of Cargill to provide digital solutions to farmers in Agri-input market place, agri-output market place and advisory.

An alumni meet of 2003 graduating batch of KIIT School of Computer Engineering (CSE), titled “Reunion of Alumni”, was organized by the School on 27th November 2021 in virtual mode. More than 40 alumni attended from different parts of the globe. They appreciated the exponential growth of KIIT in all fields due to the untiring efforts of Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS. Prof. Biswajit Sahoo, Director initiated the tradition of year-wise alumni meet and reminded the alumni the slogan of Prof. Samanta – “Strengthening Alumni – Strengthening KIIT”. Prof. Sahoo discussed the possibility of academic and research collaborations, arranging internships, alumni talk and career guidance for KIIT students with the alumni.

The meet started with ‘Krishna Bandana’ sung by Mrs. Debasmita Rout, an alumna of the same batch. Dr. Namita Panda, Assistant Professor, School of Computer Engineering delivered the welcome address and coordinated the whole session. Prof. Samaresh Mishra, Director of Student Affairs, Prof. Madhabanada Das and Prof. Santosh Kumar Pani addressed the alumni and reminisced their association with the 2003 CSE batch. 

Mr. Sidharth Tripathy and Mr. Subrat Padhi talked about future meets and collaboration with the alma mater. It was followed by an interactive session coordinated by Mr. Sambit Kumar Mohapatra, where the alumni shared their experiences at KIIT and current engagements. They expressed their gratitude to Prof. Achyuta Samanta for future growth of KIIT & KISS. They also spoke about how the branding and success of the Founder and their alma mater are giving true shape to their career and excellent visibility across the globe. They shared their professional achievements and also put forward a few suggestions on their contribution and collaboration with the alma mater. Mr. Devi Prasad Dash and Mr. Manas Paira coordinated the cultural activities. The event ended with a word of thanks by Mrs. Sagarika Behera.

“Adapt or Perish”. In a modern world changing at a never-seen-before pace, creativity and innovation shows the path to sustain and grow, for business houses. How creativity impacts the performance of a business and what steps the budding entrepreneur should take to keep up with the environment is a matter of great concern for every student of commerce and business. In this backdrop, KIIT School of Commerce & Economics (KSCE) organized a talk by renowned academician and bestselling author in the fields of Management & Entrepreneurship Prof. Sobhan S. Khanka for its students on 26th November 2021. The topic of the session was “Creativity & Innovation in Entrepreneurship”.

Joining the session, through the online mode, from New Delhi, Prof. S. S. Khanka extensively covered the various aspects of the changing face of entrepreneurship. With examples of successful implementation of creativity & innovation in solving the issues and making the business boost its revenue, Prof. Khanka deliberated on how innovation should be the mantra of success for the aspiring and budding entrepreneurs. With his hilarious humor and risible comic timing in presentation, he made the audience, comprising students and faculty members, interested in the talk.

Chairing the session, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Parida, Director, KSCE welcomed the speaker and highlighted how KSCE has been organizing lectures of renowned personalities at a regular interval for its students. KSCE student Ms. Ridhi Agrawal hosted the session, while Prof. Nirupama Mohanty, Faculty Member of KSCE proposed the formal vote of thanks. The program ended with Prof. Khanka answering the questions of the students in the virtual-audience.

Centre for Social Action Voice, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities and NSS Unit of KIIT Law School (KLS) organized a special lecture to commemorate and celebrate the “75th Year of Independence as the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on the 72nd Constitution Day 2021. Delivering the lecture, Prof. (Dr.) Bhavani Prasad Panda, Director, KLS addressed the pertinent issues and challenges of the Constitution of India. He mentioned the noble idea of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS to provide education for all and strive for welfare of the society. Everyday should be a celebration of the Constitution, which has set the viable model of governance, he said. While recalling the ideas of the Drafting Committee Members of the Constitution, he stated, the purpose of the Constitution was laid down by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who emphasized political and economical democracy.

Reflecting on critical aspects of the Constitution of India, he stated that “We the People of India” need to act like soldiers and defend the true spirit that holds the essence of the Constitution. Prof. Panda also explained the importance of justice, equality, liberty and fraternity that helps to establish a new social order that is based on the doctrine of socio-economic justice.

The keynote address was followed by reading of the Preamble and Fundamental Duties by Ms. Jinia Kundu, Program Officer, NSS Unit, KLS. About 200 faculty members and students joined the celebration. Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra Pattnaik, Head-Department of Social Sciences and Humanities gave the welcome address, while Dr. Binita Behera, Faculty Coordinator of Social Action Voice proposed the vote of thanks.

The International Online Conference on Digitalization and Revitalization of Cultural Heritage through Information Technology – ICDRCT-21 was hosted by School of Humanities, KIIT Deemed to be University in collaboration with Routledge and Research Chronicler on November 23-24, 2021.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Prof. Yuangshan Chuan, International Lion University, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan gave an informative talk on World Culture Digitalization and Revitalization in the Era of Covid-19. The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Hrushikesha Mohanty, VC, KIIT-DU; Prof. S. Nanda, Head-Cir; Professor A. K. Sen, Chairman UG Program and Dean – in – charge SOH; and Prof. J. R. Mohanty, Registrar, among others. Congratulating the convenor of the conference Dr. Deepanjali Mishra and her team, they stated that the theme of the conference was very pertinent and it was the right time to work towards preserving indigenous folklores for posterity, not just superficially but in such a way that the inherent values of our culture were understood and passed on. A vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Sukanta Chandra Swain, Associate Dean.

The technical sessions saw varied presentations on different aspects of folklores; reflections and schemas of preserving them. There were talks on how simulations and graphics could mar or facilitate human imagination, roles of artificial intelligence, data and analysis and applied phenomenology on preservation of culture. The impact of social media was discussed. Talks on robotics and e-commerce threw light on the changing dynamics of the culture.

The plenary session began with a video presentation by Prof. Anthony B. Buccitelli, Director, Pennsylvania Centre for Folklore who spoke on “Parsing (Digital) Heritage: Institutional and Vernacular Excursions in Heritage and Technology”. Prof. Zachary J. McDowell, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA gave an insightful presentation on Wikipedia.

Prof. Luo Liang, Prof, Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature and Cultures, University of Kentucky, USA gave a talk on ‘The Global White Snake.’ This was followed by a talk by Prof. Shivaji Sargar, Prof, University of Mumbai on the problems that migrating people, especially the tribals, faced and a need for the policy makers to implement changes to stop the atrocities on them. Dr. Mahendra Mishra, National Advisor, Multilingual Education, Former Sate Head, Govt of Chhattisgarh spoke about the beauty of living traditions and the humaneness in human experiences.

The plenary session was followed by technical sessions, where travelogues, graphical revolutions, E-commerce, folk traditions, artificial intelligence, technology and urban spaces were discussed.

Ms. Vishakha Singhania, research scholar, SOH, KIIT gave a short report on the proceedings of the conference at the valedictory session. There was a bustle of excitement when the best paper awards for each technical session were declared. Finally, a vote of thanks was extended by Mr. Golak Bihari Palai, research scholar, SOH KIIT. The organizing team comprised Dr. Deepanjali Mishra (convenor), Vishakha Singhania, Swayam Shikha Srichandan, Raj Aryan, Tripti Shikha Okja, Kaushiki Kriti and Ammaar Sohail.
