Dr. Ashok Kumar Badamali, Senior Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesiologist, KIMS delivered a keynote session on “New Dimensions on Palliative Care for Cardiac Patients” at “Convergence-2022”, an international conference co-organised by Vinayak Mission Research Foundation DU, and Vijaya Educational Academy, Chennai.

Dr. Badamali’s futuristic talk focused on skill development and empowerment of paramedics and allied science staff for home-based care of end stage disease patients, with support from various digital health equipment and platforms. The talk was highly appreciated by the audience and other think tanks present at the keynote session. His citation of Maharaja Parikhit’s last seven days of life as end stage pathological situation and discussions of Srimad Bhagbat chapters by various stages as an evidence of spiritual and psychological components of Palliative Care was considered as an eye-opener linkage between science and mythology.

Despite advances in cardiac therapy, heart failure remains a progressive, highly symptomatic and deadly disease that places great demands on patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems. Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to care that focuses on communication, shared decision making, and advanced care planning, provides relief from pain and other distress symptoms, integrates psychological and spiritual aspects of care; and offers a support system to help families to cope during illness and bereavement. Palliative has applications across the stages of heart failure, including early in the course of illness, often in conjunction with therapies that are intended to prolong life. However, the incorporation of palliative care into management of heart failure has been suboptimal due to various reasons like: uncertainty in disease trajectory, lack of knowledge, overlay of co-morbidity and frailty, life-saving device with complex trade off, failure to reward communication between healthcare providers and patients, siloed care and availability of limited evidence base.

Palliative care is provided by a team of palliative care doctors, nurses and social workers. They work together with cardiologists to give an extra layer of support. The team has a wide variety of approaches to treating congestive heart failure symptoms. These may include medicines, but not always. Palliative care teams are expertly trained to manage symptoms, side effects and stresses. For example, they may perform highly effective lymphatic drainage. This is a technique for reducing leg swelling and its associated pain, educating the patient about how to stand, sit and lie down to improve their breathing. They will also train the patient and family members, the use of fans, relaxation methods, meditation and breathing exercises to decrease any anxiety or panic that may accompany feelings of breathlessness.

A one-month Summer Training Program on “Modeling and Analysis of Dental Implant Prosthetics through Finite Element Methods” for the dentistry students and professionals was inaugurated at the School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT-DU on 16th May 2022.

Inaugurating the training program, Professor (Dr.) Aswini Kumar Kar, Principal, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) underlined the importance of learning Finite Element Methods (FEM) by BDS and MDS students for their medical research. This first-of-its-kind initiative in India and abroad by KIIT School of Mechanical Engineering will help dentistry students in collaborative and quality research, he informed. Though many students performed their research works with the help of expertise from this School, this generalized program will be highly beneficial to both the institutes for improving interdisciplinary research, Professor Kar stated.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor (Dr.) Bharat Chandra Routara, Dean, KIIT School of Mechanical Engineering urged the participants to take full advantage of this program, gain fundamental knowledge about Finite Element Methods and utilize it in their case to case basis research problems. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by the organizers from the School.

Professor (Dr.) Purna Chandra Mishra, Dean (Research) cited many examples of basic application of the Finite Element Method in solving dentistry problems. The experimental and clinical research being more expensive, doctors can make trials with FEM simulations for the problems including exploration of new implant materials, osseointegration, tissue engineering, implant structure and design, he said. Professor Mishra shared his expectations from the Summer Training Program and added that platforms like these would ensure dentistry students’ personal and professional career development.

Dr. Chinmay Kundu, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering briefed the participants about the training modules, while Mr. Siba Padarabinda Behera, Coordinator proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. Manoj Ukamanal and Prof. Smita Rani Panda were also present.

Noted physician and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of KIMS Prof Dr CBK Mohanty on Thursday lauded the “heroic” role played by the nurses during the Covid pandemic and encouraged students to build on their skills sets and tap on the expected 43-lakh job opening for them by 2024. He inspired the nursing students to set an example for the rest with their steadfast commitment to the profession, dedication, sympathy and compassion.

Addressing the students at an event organized by the Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), a KIIT Constituent, to commemorate International Nurses Day, Dr Mohanty said nursing is a noble profession, a profession where the nurses are a patient’s constant companion and instill hope and confidence in them.

“Nursing is to nourish; to take care and to serve. To serve without expectations is akin to motherly care. It is a relationship of confidence and this confidence brings confidence in the minds of patients,” Dr Mohanty said. “Nurses were heroes during the Covid pandemic and worked like angels during epidemics and disasters. They are the beacon of hope and compassion,” he underlined.

Maj Gen DG Dr P K Patnaik of the School of Medicine asked the nursing students to develop their skill sets on the ground as these traits will help them earn the dependence of the seniors. “You are entering a new phase in your life and this is a worthy and pious profession. Your commitment and dedication to the profession will take you ahead in life,” he said and alluded to studies saying that by 2024 India will be requiring 43 lakh trained nurses. He also underscored the need to find an Indian icon from the nursing profession who can be an inspiration for lakhs of nurses in the country.

The International Nursing Day is celebrated in the memory of Florence Nightingale, hailed as the founder of modern nursing. In all, 138 students took the oath before her portrait to commit themselves and their best to the profession. Former principal of the College of Nursing, Cancer Hill Hospital, Gwalior Prof Renuka Das elucidated on the critical role played by nurses in handling patients with care, saying the service requires 24 hours of dedication and sincerity.

Nursing Superintendent PBHM, KIMS Col Susamma Sahu called upon the students to utilize the facilities at KINS to the best of their abilities. She said knowledge and skills are key attributes for a nurse to save the patients.

Principal of KINS Prof Dr Niyati Das harped on the need to invest in the future of the nursing students to strengthen the healthcare system across the world, referring to a WHO study that highlighted the shortage of 27 million nurses worldwide.
