Every year, KIIT Deemed to be University organizes Pratijja, the annual international parliamentary debate, which attracts prodigious debating talent from across the globe. Continuing the trend, Pratijja v17, held from 3rd to 5th June 2022, was a confluence of talent from 27 institutes and universities of India and abroad as well as other independent teams across several nations deliberating and contesting for the win.

Spanning over three days, Pratijja saw the participation of 35 teams and consisted of five preliminary rounds, each with a different central topic on which motions were framed. The topics themselves were extremely versatile, ranging from Law to Gaming, Beliefs and Politics, which in turn made the debates even more engaging. This year, the event was conducted in the online mode in lieu of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After two days of incessant debate, 8 teams out of 40 made it to the Quarterfinals. Here again, the audience witnessed neck-and-neck finishes leading to disappointment as well as expressive gaiety. The event came to a conclusion with the final round where Hansraj College, Delhi was up against the non-institutional team “Current Status Quo”. With both teams fighting it out till the very end, team Status Quo ended up taking the victory title by a very slim margin.

Dr. Shyam Sundar Behura Dy. Director, SS congratulated the Organizing Committee, the ‘Kreative Eye’, and staff of KSAC for the grand success of the event.

Awareness to save energy is key to survival of the human race on planet Earth. With this vision, Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, IIT Bombay, popularly known as Solar Gandhi of India, started a public movement “Energy Swaraj Yatra”. The yatra, which began in November 2020 from Mumbai, is designed to create a public movement towards 100% adoption of solar energy. The ‘solar bus’ reached Bhubaneswar after covering across eleven states. Prof. Solanki’s ‘mobile home’ is well equipped with 3.2 kW solar panels and 6 kWh of battery storage. It also has a 3 KVA inverter. The bus runs on diesel, but all lights, cooler, cookstove, and other appliances inside it are solar-powered.

As a part of this Yatra, a seminar was organized by School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University on 1st June 2022, to deliver the ideas by Professor Solanki on “Energy, Climate Change and I”. He was welcomed by Dr. Saranjit Singh, Pro-VC, KIIT-DU, Dr. Bharat Chandra Routara, Dean, SME and Dr. Isham Panigrahi Program Head, Automobile Engineering.

Prof. Solanki enlightened the perspective of growth and prosperity at the cost of declining health of Planet Earth. Prof. He advocated a three-step approach for switching fully to solar energy — “avoid, minimize, generate’. This involved avoiding use of energy as much as possible even if it is solar energy, or at least minimizing its use through resorting to efficient appliances, and generating energy locally.

Prof. Routara, Dr. Panigrahi, other faculty members, staff and students visited the solar bus, in which Prof. Solanki has been living and travelling for the past two years. He wishes to continue this journey till 2030. The program was coordinated by Dr. Bijaya Bijeta Nayak, Dr. Sasmita Sahu and Prof. Smaranika Nayak.

THE Asia University Rankings 2022

Steps fall short often when someone calculates the strides made by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, and the rankings it has bagged in a plethora of disciplines down those years.

One more laurel comes its way as it has been ranked as the 23rd best Indian university in the overall category by the Times Higher Education in its Asia University Rankings for 2022, a giant leap forward of seven places over last year.

In The Legion of Tops

In the General Engineering (Overall category), the University jumped three places to the 12th position, which is higher than some of the IITs and prestigious private universities in the country. With an overall score of 32+, KIIT has been ranked in the cohort of 201-250 in the Asian continent, and among a handful of Indian universities that have made it to the ranking list.

This is a significant achievement for the University, which was established as an institute about 25 years back, and is considered a relatively young university in comparison to the established ones.

According to the 2022 ranking list, the University has emerged as the best in Odisha, edging past other government and private-run universities that have been mentioned in the ranking list. “KIIT has been performing at par with the prestigious institutions in India like the IITs, NITs, and other reputed universities.

Out-Smarting the Bigs

KIIT, which has placed a concerted focus on the citation, research, and international outlook, has done exceedingly well in these categories. In the Citation category, the university has scored 45.6 points. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, which has topped the Indian universities, has scored 31.5 points in this category.

In the International Outlook category, KIIT has scored 22.1 points and in Research Category, it has scored 15.3 points. Similarly, in the Teaching Category, it has scored 31.5 points.

In the Industry Income category, the university has scored 66.2 points, which is one of the best among the Indian universities and one of the prime contributors to pushing up KIITs overall ranking.

KIIT-DU is the only self-financing university from eastern India and Odisha to enter the prestigious THE Asia University Rankings, which list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. KIIT is only 18 years old as a university and 25 years old as an institute. It has also been achieving and sustaining its impressive positions in various global rankings of higher education institutions.

This is a big success for KIIT as we strive for academic excellence in all spheres, said KIIT and KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta. An elated Staff, students, management, and well-wishers of both KIIT & KISS have profoundly thanked and expressed gratitude to Dr. Samanta for the latest achievement and for his vision to place the University among the best globally.

KIIT and KISS Universities of the Temple City, the flag bearer global institutions practicing and propagating gender equality, zero-tolerance against gender-based violence, an entrepreneurship programme for tribal women and girls, capacity building of women in tribal districts, education for all and empowerment through sports, held the opening day sessions of South Asia Women’s Conference (SAWC) 2022 on 27th May 2022.

The two-day event, in association with the United States Consulate General Hyderabad, held in association with multiple UN bodies, has started discussing sustainable networking for the development of women and girls in South Asia. The SAWC 2022 theme this year is “Towards an Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable World.” Seventy delegates are participating in the meet.

Welcoming the delegates Vice-Chancellor of KIIT Deemed University and Chairman of the inaugural session, Prof Sasmita Samanta said “Women are the epitome of knowledge and we have to connect to the globe to assert the power that we possess with humility.’’

She also observed that women of South Asia have the unique culture of safeguarding the well-being of all around them with their noble qualities like tolerance, peace, and patience, but neglecting their own selves. This conference will try to zero in on the reasons behind such neglect so that the well-being of women folks would be taken care of, in the future.

In her keynote address leading actress-turned director and activist Nandita Das, “we have to say Yes to all that we can achieve and no to what means NO! Saying that those who are suffering from it have to carry the burden of changing it, the actor added If we did not fight for it, who would do it for us?, the noted actress also observed that it was not a fight between men and women as we have to share the responsibilities and burdens of our lives to march ahead.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Frankie Sturm Acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Hyderabad said, “The absence of equality makes it difficult for communities to resolve conflict, complicates efforts to boost economic prosperity and undermines countries’ abilities to grow. The untapped potential of women is a lost opportunity for economic growth, equitable development and conflict resolution. We have to regain the opportunity and achieve gender equality.”

Smt. Lakshmi Puri, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, in her video message at the inaugural ceremony, highlighted the way towards ushering in Planet 50-50 by 2030 and the centrality of #SDG5 for achieving Agenda 2030.

“Empowerment is both an agent and a product of social change. It is about choice and ability to influence one’s desired action and be part of the decision-making process,” said Mr. Arun Sahu, High Commissioner of India to Trinidad and Tobago.

Ms Acharapan Yuvaprapas, Consul General Thai Consulate, Kolkata in her speech referred to “Gender Rights equality is a Human Right issue.’’

“Through inclusivity and sustainability, we can find solutions to all global problems,’’ said Ms. Tahina Rasamoelina Chargee D’Affaires, Embassy of the Republic of Madagascar.

Mr. Rahul Bose Eminent Actor and Social Activist in his message said. “I hope, workable, implementable, interesting, and innovative ideas come about from the interactions. But more than that, I hope that the people who have attended the seminars go back to their homelands and start implementing the ideas that they have come up with and discussed.”

Ms. Abha Mishra, United Nations Development Programme, State Head – Odisha said “All the SDGs cannot be achieved if we have no mechanism to address the gender gap and difference.”

Mr. Himanshu Bal, World Food Programme, State Head – Odisha noted that if we could address hunger, we could also address SDG 5. Both men and women have to be empowered at the same time. Later three sessions of panel discussions were also held during the day in which UNFPA, WFP, UNESCO, UN Volunteers and UN Women representatives participated.

The prime objective of the conference is to bring together select U.S. Government exchange alumni working on gender equity-related themes from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and India. The regional conference with several sessions of workshops, group discussions and breakout sessions are to ensure a designated path in order to achieve the SDG Agenda 2030 of the United Nations.
