The KIIT Law School MUN Society organized a Guest Lecture by Lieutenant General Satinder Singh Saini, as part of the inauguration ceremony of the National Crisis Committee MUN Competition, on 20th March 2022. The event was organized under the leadership of Mr. Anirudha Choudhury, Assistant Professor-I, KIIT School of Law (KLS).

Tracing the historical relationship between Russia and Ukraine, Lieutenant General Saini stated that the present countries of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus all trace their cultural roots to Kievan Rus, a medieval principality in the Kievan Rus’ region. The Rurikids, a Varangian dynasty, had ruled the Rus principality from the 10th century. The principality fell victim to the Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus in the 13th century.

Kyiv was the capital of Russia from the 9th century until the Mongol invasion in 1240. The principality of Muscovy and, subsequently, the Russian Empire, made Moscow their capital. In a mostly bloodless incident in 1783, Imperial Russia seized Ukraine. The Cossacks of Ukraine, who had been semi-independent since the early seventeenth century, were ready to join the Russian Empire, and the Tsar welcomed them with open arms. The Ukrainians put up some resistance, but it was quickly put down. One of the first steps in the Russian Empire’s expansion into the Balkans and the Black Sea region was the acquisition of Ukraine.

He went on to state that the other countries were imposing tough sanctions on Russia which will have long term consequences. The issues will be political as well as economical as it directly and indirectly involves many countries in the world, therefore international implications will emerge. Global trade will be impacted to a huge extent because of the sanctions imposed on both sides. The western powers will insist on other nations to stop trading with Russia, for instance to stop import of energy and put sanctions on those nations who continue to trade with Russia.

The cold war like situation will emerge again with Russia and China on one side and the Western powers on the other. Mr. Saini quoted a famous line which stated that “Being an enemy of America can be dangerous but being a friend can be fatal”. He also threw light upon the amount of damage that was caused due to the war. There was infringement of sovereignty of a nation with huge amounts of human rights violations. Thousands of innocent people have been killed or have lost their family members, a huge number of children have been orphaned and rendered homeless. He emphasized on the futility of the war and the repercussions and the toll that they can take over the lives of the innocent citizens of a war-torn nation.

Lieutenant General Saini also discussed the past, present as well as future scenarios which would take place sooner or later in Ukraine and Russia. The lecture was interactive and enriching, providing a lot of insight about the present conflict to the participating members.

The Department of International Law, KIIT Law School (KLS) and KLS MUN Society organized a webinar talk by Professor Dr. S. N. Misra, Dean, KIIT School of Management on the current Russia-Ukraine crisis on 2nd March 2022.

In his talk, Prof. Mishra described his visit to the erstwhile Soviet Union where he was a witness to the signing of a pact of offering arms and ammunitions between India and Russia. He elaborated on the history of Ukraine, stating that a large number of people there belong to Russian ethnicity and the country has been divided into East and West Ukraine. After the Second World War, the USA and USSR had a bitter relationship. The very asymmetrical power structure created international institutions like the United Nations, World Trade Organization, The World Bank and others.

He elaborated on the concept of cold war and the initiation and failure of the Berlin Wall and unification of Germany in 1989.  He moved on to the Russia-Ukraine Treaty of 1997 and then to the Ukrainian Revolution in the year 2014, which began with the civil unrest in Kyiv as a part of Ukraine’s ongoing Euromaidan protests against the government.  He discussed the Capture of Crimea in February and March 2014 and developments thereafter. Throwing light on the legal positions of the current conflict, he stated that Russia issued a statement saying that “they attacked Ukraine on solely humanitarian purposes”, while Ukraine argues that the attack is infringing their sovereignty as a nation.

The session not only provided the participants in-depth knowledge about the ongoing crisis, but also enlightened about the various intricacies of the powers and functions of the United Nations and other international bodies. Prof. Anirudha Choudhury, Assistant Professor, KIIT Law School also spoke on the occasion.

Webinar on International Relations and Foreign Policy

The KIIT Law School MUN (Model United Nations) Society, under its Faculty Convener, Mr. Anirudha Choudhury, Assistant Professor, organized a webinar on International Relations and Foreign Policy concerning the recent hostilities in Afghanistan on 27th August, 2021. Dr. Amarendra Khatua, a career diplomat, was the chief speaker at the webinar.

Dr. Khatua belongs to Indian Foreign Service, 1981 Batch. During his career, he  held various positions in the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Missions abroad. He has held the positions as Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations; Dean, Foreign Service Institute, and also Secretary (Special Assignment) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Speaking on the recent developments in Afghanistan, Dr.  Khatua pointed to the massive humanitarian crisis the country is facing. The need of the hour is to ensure safety of the people, rather than any diplomatic victories. A great deal of emphasis was given to the US diplomatic failure of stratospheric levels, similar to the one in Vietnam, as ultimately the democratic government in Afghanistan failed and the Taliban took over the country. He focused on the reason that led to this crisis. He also threw light on the incompetence of the last regime and its bureaucrats, because in the midst of such a huge humanitarian crisis engulfing their nation, they decided to flee.

Discussing India’s stance on the current crisis, he informed that under the Operation Devi Shakti India has till now evacuated 5800 Indians. However, 800 Indians are still stuck at the airport. India has a history of not interfering into other countries’ affairs, he pointed out, when asked about India’s likely stand towards the resistance brewing in Panjshir Valley.

Dr. Amarendra Khatua went through all the facts thoroughly and answered all questions and doubts of the students as well as faculty members. It was an enriching experience for them.
