The Student Counseling Cell, KIIT-DU organized a virtual session on “Safety & Security” on 15th January 2022 for the students of School of Electronics as part of the leadership talk series. The first year and second-year students from the School of Electronics and their tutor mentors participated in the session.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sucheta Priyabadini, Director, Student Counseling mentioned that addresses by experts to the students, in the relevant domain areas, have been initiated by the Counseling Cell in recent times. The sessions involve the industry experts and also the alumni, who have excelled in their respective fields, to share their success stories with their juniors. On this occasion, she welcomed and introduced the Guest Speaker, Mr. Haris Bin Zaman, IPS (2017 batch). KIIT had early glimpses of his leadership qualities during his days as a student, she said.
Mr. Zaman belongs to Ranchi, Jharkhand. He completed his schooling at DPS Ranchi and subsequently did B.Tech in electronics and telecommunication engineering from KIIT-DU. He then took up a job in the corporate sector and moved to Delhi. Delhi was the place where he thought he could chase his childhood dream of entering the Civil Services. With single minded devotion, he cleared UPSC twice. First, he joined Indian Revenue Services and then moved on to the Indian Police Service and is currently serving as ASP in the Giridih District of Jharkhand. His major work area includes crime detection and prevention with a thrust on community policing initiatives. He believes in building bridges with the common people and working for their empowerment.
In his talk, Mr. Zaman recalled his connection with KIIT and fond memories of his past association with the students and the faculty. He spoke in admiration of Dr. Achutya Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS who has been his inspiration. He told the students how participation in various events of KIIT in different capacities, helped him hone his organizational and leadership abilities. Based on his experience, he briefed the students on how to go about approaching Civil Services.
He talked about the various branches operating in the Police Department, like intelligence, crime, national security, etc. Like Odisha, Jharkhand is also affected by the problem of LWE. His duty coverage, besides dealing with Maoism, also deals with issues relating to community policing, women security, compliance to Covid appropriate behaviour and maintenance of general law and order.
Prof. Samaresh Mishra, Director, Students Affairs thanked Mr. Zaman, while requesting the Director, Student Counseling Cell to organize another session with all the students of the University. Prof. Sudhakar Sahu, Prof. P. K.Patra, Prof. Sudhanshu Sekhar Singh and Prof. Israj Ali also spoke at the session. The session ended with concluding remarks from Prof. Israj Ali.
