SME Organizes Talk on ‘Novel Joining Technologies Used in Manufacturing of Li-ion Batteries for EVs’

Dr. Mantra Prasad Satpathy, Assistant Professor (II), School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT  Deemed to be University delivered a talk on “Novel Joining Technologies Used in Manufacturing of Li-ion Batteries for EVs” on 10th February 2021, through Virtual mode, under the “Speak and Search Lecture Series” organized by the School.

Dr. Satpathy said, “There is a severe degradation of air quality due to the harmful emissions by gasoline-powered automobiles. Thus, from the aspects of global warming and rapid depletion of the fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to shift to the electric vehicle (EV) concept. However, the power of EVs is entirely dependent on the energy storing capacity of their batteries. Hence, automotive battery manufacturing is one of the vital aspects determining the automobile industry’s future in the subsequent years. Currently, the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for automotive, involves the use of cells having different shape and size. These cells are usually joined together to form a module.  There are tens of modules in a battery pack. As a result, a significant amount of joining such as welding is needed to deliver electricity in a battery pack. It is not easy to join such a large number of battery cells because of the difficulty with welding multiple layers of thin, highly conductive, and dissimilar materials.” The speaker also discussed the robust joining processes developed for assembling the batteries by his research group.

The session was attended by the faculty members and students of the School of Mechanical Engineering and was quite interactive and informative. Dr. Purna Chandra Mishra, Dean, Research, School of Mechanical Engineering thanked Dr. Satpathy for delivering the lecture. It was coordinated by Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rathore, Assistant Professor (II), School of Mechanical Engineering, KIIT-DU.
