KIIT School of Civil Engineering organized an Alumni Talk on “Design philosophy of Structures” by Er. Somesh Ch. Mathur, a 2014 B.Tech. pass out, on virtual mode on 15th May 2021. The event started with a brief introduction of Er. Mathur by Harshit Kishlay, B.Tech. student.
In his talk, Er. Mathur focused on the design philosophy of structures. He discussed how software is reducing the time required for design and is being used for around 70-80 percent of total design analysis. He also detailed the parameters like skilled labour, type of structure, client needs, materials, location, etc. that affect the design philosophy of a structure. Subsequently, he explained the procedure of how a design basis report is prepared and also showcased the calculations in brief so that students can have an idea of it. He showed step by step analysis of load calculation, combination, effects, and modeling the geometries of structures in order to get a good workable design. His talk was filled with practical knowledge that helped the audience, mainly undergraduate B.Tech. students, to learn and grasp information.
Er. Somesh Mathur was the sole nominee by Govt. of India at undergraduate level for commonwealth scholarship plan in 2014. He has worked in designing of high rise RCC structures in some of the notable projects such as Tata Housing Rajarhat and Shapoorji Pallonji Joyville. He has also worked as a Design Engineer of bridges in JACOBS, and currently he is working in RAMBOLL and has ongoing works in many cities such as Wessex, UK and Helsinki and Kivenhalti, Finland.
Prof. S. Moulick, Dean, School of Civil Engineering addressed the audience by welcoming one and all. He expressed his gratitude to Er. Somesh Mathur for sparing his time for the talk at such a short notice. Thereafter, Prof. B.G. Mohapatra, Director, Consultancy Services talked about the strengths of the civil engineering department with respect to industry connect and its impact on students.
The talk was followed by a healthy discussion between the students and Er. Somesh Mathur. The event ended with vote of thanks by Prof. D. K. Bera, Associate Dean, T&P, SCE. The event was attended by 125 participants.
