KIIT Researchers Develop Electromagnetic Shielding Material from Industrial Waste

A group of researchers, comprising Dr. S. K. S. Parashar, Rishu Prasad, Avinash R. Pai, Dr. S. O. Oyadiji and Dr. Sabu Thomas, from Nano Sensor Lab, School of Applied Sciences, KIIT-DU; Department of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering, University of Manchester, UK; and International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Gandhi University, Kerala have developed a highly efficient electromagnetic shielding material.

The research has successfully utilized hazardous classified industrial waste as a value-added product for high performance shielding the novel pollution. The recent invisible pollution of electromagnetic waves caused by mobile towers and advanced communication systems has serious health hazards as well as adverse effects on electronic instruments.

The research entitled “Utilization of hazardous red mud in silicone rubber/MWCNT nanocomposites for high performance electromagnetic interference shielding” reported highest ever electromagnetic shielding in the world of 83.4 dB by utilizing red mud in polymer matrix having thickness of 2 mm. The research paper has been published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, which has an impact factor of 11.072. This study has not only aided in minimizing the electromagnetic pollution but also has demonstrated the potential of red mud as electromagnetic shielding material.
