The NSS wing of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized a school health program at Govt. High School, Harekrushna Nagar, Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar on 11th December 2021. The program was conducted by NSS volunteers of B.Sc. Around 50 school children from 6th class, 13 school teachers and 30 NSS volunteers with three faculty members participated.
The aim of the program was promotion of positive health, prevention and control of diseases, screening and awakening health consciousness among school children and teachers. Activities such as physical assessment including head to toe examination and anthropometric measurement of 50 students followed by assessment of blood pressure and weight of school teachers were conducted.
In the assessment, a few children were found having dental caries and underweight. The volunteers requested the headmaster to refer them to KIMS Hospital for further investigation and treatment. NSS volunteers demonstrated and practiced steps of safe hand washing techniques by using a variety of instructional aids. It was a great opportunity and pleasing experience for NSS volunteers to interact, educate regarding personal hygiene and counselling to students regarding health care. First aid box with dressing material and sanitizer was provided to the headmaster for future use.
At the end of the program, refreshment and distribution of masks among students and teachers were done.
