The Department of Obstetrical and Gynecological Nursing, Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), a constituent under KIIT-DU, in association with the Society of Midwives India (SOMI) Odisha Chapter, celebrated International Midwives Day (IMD) 2023, with the theme of “Together again: From evidence to reality.”
IMD is celebrated every year on May 5 to recognise the role of midwives in providing quality care to mothers during all trimester of pregnancy. The focus of this programme was to inculcate evidence-based practices in real life scenarios towards maternal health for the best health outcome.
In her welcome address Prof. Niyati Das, Principal, KINS, acknowledged midwives as the warriors of mothers’ health. The celebrations started with anInter- University collage competition, in which around 30 participants from different universities showcased their artistic skills by creating collages which depicted the significance of evidence-based practices in midwifery care for better health outcomes in maternal and child health.
The competition was judged by Senior Professor Dr.S.K.Rath from Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology KIMS and Dr. Sinmayee Devi, Vice-Principal, L.J.M. College of Nursing, Bhubaneswar. They appreciated the efforts made by the participants in highlighting the role of midwives in maternal and newborn health.
Bishnupriya Lenka and Susmita Dey, tutors at KINS played an essential role in successfully organising the events. A quiz competition was also held among antenatal and postnatal mothers at O&G Ward,KIMS. Ten mothers participated and answered questions related to ante-partum, intra-partum and post-partum care. The competition aimed at raising awareness on the importance of regular ante-natal care, proper nutrition and encouraging normal vaginal delivery. The competition was organized smoothly by Asst. Prof Rojalin Dash and Elina Jena, tutor at KINS.The winners were awarded prizes by Prof. Kalyani Rath, Vice-Principal, KINS. Finally, a health education session was conducted by third year GNM students on reducing unnecessary Lower Segment Cesarean Section (LSCS) and promoting normal vaginal delivery. The session aimed to address the rising trend of cesarean deliveries in India and educate mothers regarding the benefits of normal vaginal delivery, the risks associated with LSCS, and the importance of preparing for childbirth through ante-natal care and proper nutrition.
