Hon’ble Mr. Justice L. Nageswara Rao, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India delivered a talk on “Right to Privacy Under Indian Constitution in the Present Day: Issues and Challenges” at KIIT Law School (KLS) on August 13, 2021. The talk, under Judge’s Lecture Series, was organized by the Centre for Constitutional Law Studies and Research (CCLSR) under the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law, KLS.
Delivering the lecture, Justice L. Nageswara Rao explained the concept of Liberty and how the Preamble has been the torch-bearer of the Constitution itself. Liberty is something that human beings need to lead a happy life and it differs from one individual to another, he stated. Highlighting the issues regarding privacy from the Indian perspective and the importance of Article 21, he narrated its concept and evolution by citing its existence through various landmark judgments. He noted, “If we have to broadly identify the challenges and issues with privacy, we need to dive deeper into the concept”.
He also discussed various aspects of Right to privacy like Informational Privacy, right to bodily integrity, right to sexual preference, right to abortion and highlighted the recent issues and judgements that have been passed by U.S.A Supreme Court.
The lecture was followed by a Q&A session. Prof. (Dr.) Bhabani Prasad Panda, Director KIIT Law School also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Kyvalya Garikapati, Associate Professor and faculty head of CCLSR proposed the vote of thanks. The event was hosted by Ms. Upasana Mohanty, Co-convener of CCLSR and attended by the faculty members, academicians, the members of the CCLSR, and students of the Law School.
