KIIT School of Law (KLS) celebrated ‘Constitution Day’ on 26th November 2023 to foster a deep understanding of the nuances within the Constitution of India. The event was organized by the Centre for Constitutional Law Studies and Research (CCLSR) in collaboration with the NSS Unit of KLS. The theme of the celebration was “Constitutional Silences, Unconstitutional Inaction,” and the deliberations focused on the areas where the Constitution is silent and the consequences of inaction deemed unconstitutional.
Delivering the keynote address, Shri Pinaki Misra, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (L.S.) & Sr. Advocate, Supreme Court of India, engaged the audience with a detailed analysis of the case of the State of Punjab vs. Principal Secretary to the Government of Punjab. He emphasized the significance of the judiciary in upholding constitutional values and preventing unconstitutional actions. In particular, he highlighted a case where the court reaffirmed the principle that the Governor, as an unelected head of the state, cannot misuse constitutional powers to impede the normal course of lawmaking by the state.
Prof. (Dr.) Saranjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, KIIT-DU, shared insightful thoughts on the significance of Constitution Day and the relevance of understanding constitutional silences. Prof. (Dr.) N. L. Mitra, Emeritus Professor, added to the intellectual discourse by shedding light on historical perspectives and constitutional interpretations. One of the highlights of the event was the reading of the Preamble by Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, Director, KLS.
