KIIT School of Languages Organizes Lecture on ‘Angasudhi: The Kinetics of Non-Verbal Communication’

The Rhythm & Rhyme Club of School of Languages, KIIT Deemed to be University organized its first lecture titled, ‘Angasudhi: The Kinetics of Non-Verbal Communication’ by Ms. Arupa Lahiry on 6th February 2021. Ms. Arupa Lahiry is a senior disciple of Smt. Chitra Vishweswaran of Chennai and is empanelled with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Doordarshan, Delhi and Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Ms. Lahiry’s lecture started with a brief discussion on non-verbal communication and how dance movements and gestures (mudras) play a major role in expressing the unsaid. She explained the titular term Angasudhi, which plays a major role in Bharatanatyam dance, through the course of her lecture. Besides being an academic discourse, this lecture was unique in the way it coupled performance and practice of classical dance forms. Discussing kinesics in communication through Alarippu in Bharatanatyam, Ms. Lahiry performed three Rasas out of nine in dance for her mesmerized audience.

The event was conceptualized and coordinated by Ms. Debanjali Roy, the Faculty coordinator of Rhythm and Rhyme and Assistant Professor in KIIT School of Languages. The lecture commenced with the welcome address by Ms. Vaishali Gupta, Student Coordinator, Rhythm & Rhyme followed by the lecture, demonstration and interaction. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Sabyasachi Mishra, Technical Head, Rhythm & Rhyme Club.

The interaction session recorded tremendous positive response from participants as they engaged in deliberations and discussions with Ms. Lahiry. Participants in this lecture consisted of not only students and staff of different branches of study in KIIT Deemed to be University but also from academic institutions across the country.
