‘Kamakshi’, the Women’s Society under KIIT Student Activity Centre (KSAC), conducted an open mic discussion on the occasion of National Girl Child Day on 24th January 2022 virtually. The topic of the event, held in the backdrop of 75 years of Indian Independence, i.e Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav by NIC & Ministry of Culture through AICTE, was “Empowerment of Girls”.
From Amelia Earhart to Asha Bhosle, Audrey Hepburn to Savitribai Phule, there’s a girl for everyone. These girls, despite hailing from many walks of life and different eras, have defied expectations and served as pillars of strength for girls in this society.
To exemplify such sentiment, the members of the society had prepared a video where they shared their inspirational stories. This was followed by a presentation by the faculty coordinator, Ms. Parthiba Chakraborty, where she spoke about the statistics depicting the position of girl child in various categories like literacy rate, employment, the key problems of a girl child, their rights and how they are treated by our society, the government schemes for the female child, and the impact of mass media on the issues of a female child. She also spoke on how we can make a change in society.
After the completion of her presentation, the forum was open for discussion in the form of an open mic session, where the students of KIIT viz, Sanskriti Mishra, Priya Aditi, Subandhu, Preyrana Mishra, Ananya Jena, Pratyush Chauhan, Shreya Jha, Suhani Das, Swati Das, Anwesha Mishra, Parth Tiwari, Aniruddha Roy, Kuwar Vishal Singh, Prateek Preet expressed their views on topics like significance & history of National Day of Girl Child, child marriage, child molestation, importance of starting early, importance of physical education for girls, boys taking up the role of empowering the girls around them, and many other topics which are the need of the hour in context of female children.
The discussion was moderated by Asst. Prof. Parthiba Chakraborty, Faculty-Coordinator of Kamakshi. Dr. Shyam Sundar Behura, Dy. Director Student Services congratulated the students for taking up the initiative. The society thanked Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS for advocating girl child education and acknowledged KIIT leadership for providing an inclusive environment for students and staff at KIIT. The event was organized by the Society Coordinator Simran S. Bhuyan and Asst. Coordinator, Anvesha Kanodia.
