KISS Holds Webinar on ‘Sterilization and Disinfection: The Electrical Way’

A webinar was organized by the School of Natural Sciences and Tribal Technology, KISS Deemed to be University on sterilization and disinfection on 24th August 2020. The topic carried high relevance due to the current pandemic situation, as regular sterilization and disinfection have become the need of the hour. At the same time, there is a need to reduce dependence on chemicals and other such substances. This webinar opened a new avenue of alternatives, like that of high voltage, pulse power, plasma, microwave and UV light.

The chief speaker, Dr. Subhanarayan Sahoo, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering, Ahmadabad, Gujarat Technical University in his address said, “I am grateful to the Founder of KIIT and KISS for giving me a platform to complete Ph.D. as I am an alumni of KIIT”. He threw light on the meaning of sterilization, disinfection and its significance in the current pandemic situation. He underscored the importance of shifting from chemical based sterilization to electrical sterilization which revolves around ‘no chemical, no temperature, and no water mode of disinfection’. Dr. Sahoo emphasized the need for creating awareness on the use of electrical methods of sterilization and disinfection even at the household level.

Vice-Chancellor, KISS (DU), Prof. Harekrishna Satapathy, in his welcome address, said “There should be research on indigenous methods of sterilization and disinfection”.  He also introduced the chief speaker to the participants.  

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yasobanta Das, Head, Department of Chemistry, KISS-DU shared the relevance and aims of organizing a webinar on this burning topic, while Dr. Bikram Keshari Das, Faculty in Chemistry, threw light on various themes of the topic.

The deliberation by the guest speaker was followed by a thought-provoking question and answer session.

The webinar concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Rashmi Mohapatra, Associate Dean, School of Natural Sciences and Tribal Technology. “It is a matter of pleasure and pride to organize a webinar on a topic which is so close to KISS’s heart. I am sure, the topic will open umpteen opportunities for the students of KISS to use their learning from lab to land and emerge as change agents in their community by promoting indigenous sciences, technology and knowledge,” Dr. Mohapatra remarked.

The webinar was organized and coordinated by the School of Natural Sciences and Tribal Technology, headed by Dr. Rashmi Mohapatra, Associate Dean, and the Department of Chemistry, headed by Dr. Yasobanta Das and Dr. Bikram Keshari Das, faculty.
